Seawind 1200 TEC 3

Getting close to settling on a 2004 model of one of the above .Having a survey and sea trial done next week.
Any opinions of problems these specific boats may have had that I need to look out for?

Re: Seawind 1200 TEC 3

From what I have seen, most Seawind 1200s appear to have been charter boats.

I don't know much about them, but the ones I've seen don't look to have much bridgedeck clearance.

You may find it started life as a Grainger 37 project that went belly up. I'm sure tony Grainger will enlighten you if asked

Re: Seawind 1200 TEC 3

Last one I sold was pretty old and tired but sailed past a lagoon off cape moreton on its delivery trip from Mooloolaba to Port Macquarie. Mind you the lagoon was busy sinking .

Good safe solid but not spectacular. About half the 1200s went into charter. Being a tec 3 its less likely to have been chartered. Allan (44C) is correct their bridgedeck clearance is not spectacular. But its okay. No known significant faults, no history of osmosis, no history of structural failure and no one has lost a rig or managed to tip one.

No idea what seaslug means about a failed project, as in the 1200. The Grainger azure 37 was built by a few people some more succesful than others, culminating in the Perry 40 and then Seawind did the 1200. The Tec was a development where the TEC stands for Targa enclosed cockpit. The 1200 was replaced by the 1160.

OK thanks all.
I will know more next week but I am told this is the second last built and never in charter and has been around Brisbane most of its life.

I do know most of them.

You getting a survey, if so make sure its someone who knows the boats.

Usual things to check - engines get an oil sample, saildrives, anodes etc, wiring - particularly looking for addons and or add ins. Battery age. Short story is the things that will cost you money are usually in the electrics. Next thing to cost money is anchor gear - particularly chain that has sat in the locker.

the ad says (if its the boat I am thinking of) a david lambourne rig? I would find that surprising.

Met a guy who sailed one across the Atlantic twice. Said it wasn't a blazing performer but was very seaworthy.

Yes , that's right it started life as the azure 37, only a few were built using a high tec , for the times epoxy layup from memory, there were problems and they ended up heavy, hence the low bridge deck clearance . Just about all the azure 37 's got stretched to 40. It's a long while ago now but I seem to remember tony Grainger wasn't happy with the new mould owners using his name yet not his expertise for the changes. I may be wrong but tony will set us all straight.

Re: Seawind 1200 TEC 3

The SW1200 design started life back the very early 1990's as a Grainger Azure 37 as a strip planked cedar epoxy build. It was then stretched to 40 by owner builders then put into production by Bryan Perry Brisbane Australia. I was told Tony Grainger never got royalties for each vessel built and then the boat was further modified by Perry. This Perry 40 design was then bought by Seawind.
There was a major floor with the modified Perry 40 design where it had problems with the main bulk head separating away from the deck and cracking around the doorway into the main cabins in this bulk head. This occurred after the vessel was subjected to prolong heavy weather windward sailing. EG. sailing the Gulf of Carpenteria.
One reason this happened was the doorway was cut higher to give more head room which then weakened the general area as well as little or no fibreglass reinforcing being used in this high stress join area.
The fix was to grind back the area and then add uni directional and biaxle glass.
