Sea Scout catamaran flips in SF bay.

15 Sea Scouts rescued from San Francisco Bay | abc7news.com

Anyone have more details?? If it really was 15 kids and an adult on a 30 ft cat, overloading may be the most likely cause.

Re: Sea Scout catamaran flips in SF bay.

Interesting, when talking to the folks from seascouts in Fl they required the vessel to be inspected and certified to hold more than a 6pack+capt n crew. The process for this is incredibly involved and no way a 30' should pass.
I wonder if it was the parent/ scout leaders boat.

30' catamaran flipping or 50' sport fisher taking on water?
Why sweat the details,

The important thing is THEY WERE THE FIRST TO REPORT IT!!

Re: Sea Scout catamaran flips in SF bay.

Definitely a mono, in spite of all the news coverage. Certainly can't trust reporters to get it right these days.

Here a couple more photos of the boat from the scouts facebook page. The first photo is after is was righted and pumped out. It must be double bottomed like a dinghy, because it didn't sink when the mast hit the water. I guess the scouts learned (1) you need to stay on the high side, and (2) don't cleat the sheets off.

"inspected and certified" - perhaps a terminology difference. I don't believe non-powered craft go through the type of inspection you're thinking of.

I had made the comment under the assumption it was a catamaran and one with power. The mono showed looks crowded with 8 people can't imagine it with 15

Re: Sea Scout catamaran flips in SF bay.

As it now appears to have been established that it was not a catamaran would the mods please edit the title of this thread & also take it out of the multihull section?
