Sattelite dish on a cat

Hi everybody and Happy New Year!
My question is: Can you install a satellite dish and decoder on a boat to receive TV stations while at harbor or on the hook someplace?
I am in Langkawi, Malaysia and want to sail down to Australia in April after I pick up my newly-build cat in Vietnam.
I am grateful for any advise you can give me.
Thomas

Re: Sattelite dish on a cat

No personal experience, but I've been looking at this:
Marine Satellite TV Tracking

It's a 2-d system for in harbor at anchor. Of course if you're at a rough enough anchorage it won't work. This is much cheaper than a full on works anywhere system such as:

Re: Sattelite dish on a cat

Hi Thomas,

We have been installing those for so many years. There are even the ones that work under sail in choppy seas and from anywhere. It just depends on how much you want to spend..
Cheers

Re: Sattelite dish on a cat

Thomas, There are several manufacturers of satellite systems for boats. However, if your not in an area covered by satellite providers, you can't get service. So that is what you need to check first and then find a system compatible with that service. Not all systems are compatible with every service provider. The type of boat does not matter. Good luck. The 2d system I posted a link to uses the dish you get from your satellite service provider.

Re: Sattelite dish on a cat

I have been using a KVH older model no longer manufactured for 7 years. Works great at anchor or on the move. I purchased mine when WM were selling them for about $2000 back in 2007. I had to program it a second time when I moved my boat from a US marina to my home Canadian waters. Could no longer subscribe to DISH. Bell is more expensive but is the only system that will work up here in the cold north.

The OP is talking about Malaysia and Australia, so U.S. and Canadian providers aren't going to help him much. Chuck

Re: Sattelite dish on a cat

My friends did it and it worked while living aboard using a regular home tv dish. When not at the dock, the problem is if the boats swings around much it doesn't stay linked... so you have to go out and adjust it. I think there are high $ boat ones that keep it on track. Not sure what areas are covered though.

Re: Sattelite dish on a cat

We have the track it system.

Not sure if there is local coverage but assuming yes, they work fine. By the time, the 2D system stops working you probably aren't watching TV anyway because the boat is bouncing around too much.

For use at anchor, and even under way when not healing, this is a great, inexpensive solution. $900 US:
