No idea and probably not qualified to ask the question, but in this case with the windward ama so severely compromised, could the full main and loose jib be moving the CE aft and raising the windward ama, so keeping the tri from listing further or capsizing?

Old race boats are a bit scary, they have been pushed to their limit on a regular basis.
Glad this guy is ok, so sad to see a boat in trouble. And yes, Thursday night Rain Dog and I, along with a handful of other liveaboards were tending to about 6 boats in our marina that were breaking loose, going to break loose, about to sink, and one beating the hell out of a dock box. Crazy night nice and snug in harbor, offshore would of been extremely difficult especially for an old racing tri being singlehanded.

It ain't the heat, it's the humidity, and it ain't the meat it's the motion.

11' waves in one circumstance are puppy dogs. They are less so in other conditions. The period of the waves, or the distance between them is a huge factor, as well as how confused the sea is with waves coming from multiple angles.

You can cross the ocean with 3 or 4 meter waves in a following sea and sit there and pick your teeth, even with it blowing 30+ knots. It's entirely different matter if you need to run a different course and the waves are closer together and at odds with each other.

In addition, if something breaks that compromises your stability or ability to maneuver, then even relatively benign conditions can turn problematic pretty quickly.

It's not clear from the video how much time has elapsed since the storm/event. It could be many hours later and the seas may have settled down. So who knows what it was like earlier.

If I were in their shoes and one of my amas flooded my primary concern would have been capsizing. I probably would have thown out a drogue on the starboard side and and left the sails up to try and keep the boat from going over to starboard, then for safety moved to the dinghy and stayed near the boat. Looks like that may have been what they did.

Wasn't this about the time that a couple of Baylor students got in big trouble with a dinghy that capsized in high winds, freezing temps, and a bit of snow on Lake Waco? (That's not my favorite prescription for lake sailing.)

Interesting that the guy on the tri was rescued after using personal message service (I'm assuming some form of Spot or Inreach), and not via more traditional comms such as VHF/MF, PLB/EPIRB, etc.), but that he did have a survival suit.

The limit for multi's is 10' 11". Beyond that we capsize, break up and sink. Oh and our balsa cores rot out instantly.
