We just sailed that area this summer, also up to Rome out to the Pontine Islands (Ponza and Palmerola), around Sardinia, out to the Aeolian Islands, through the Strait of Messina, Sicily
, etc. We spent two months in Italy. We've shared some of our favorite places in posts on our blog.
In terms of cruising guides
Noonsite online- before you go, look at every port in the area you'll be cruising in. I would take screenshots on my ipad
so I could refer back when I was sailing and offline
I did the same with a number of sailor's blogs who had cruised in the region before we
Rod Heikell's Italian Waters Pilot Guides (and be sure you get the updates online)
We also have his and his wife's Mediterranean
Cruising Book and Almanac (good for info on ports
you pull into)
You now can get a number of Imray Guides online in downloadable app format. The app is called Imray Nautical. They're much cheaper than the non-digital version. Just give yourself plenty of bandwith ahead of time to download them
Rick Steves was good for land travel
I have a number of other ebooks for the area and if you PM me or send me a note via our blog, I'll loan them to you via Amazon where I bought them.
Enjoy your cruise!
