Great interview.
As others have said, nothing new, but putting all together the less biased cat/mono comparison I have ever saw and that is due to the cat owners that are really very nice guys and completely out of that wave: cats are better than monohulls or the other way around.
An interesting thing that I had already noticed in practical terms, regarding speed on
passage between cats and monohulls, for instance on the
ARC. Between a performance cat and a performance
monohull passage times are not different on the
ARC but the cat can be sailed faster if one is just having fun with it for sometime, so why is that?
I had already found the right answer but it is nice to see it confirmed by a an experienced owner of a performance cat: Monohulls while cruising are sailed to the average
wind, and the gusts are absorbed by excessive heeling without any problem, catamarans, that have not that
safety absorbing
power, are sailed to the max gusts.
That means in many cases sailed to less 5 to 10k
wind. It is normal to have 20k wind gusting 30K for instance. That is a huge difference and it explains why theoretically faster boats can have a cruising speed on passage similar to apparently slower boats.
Very nice also the advantage and disadvantages regarding having two or one
engine. Nice also regarding
water tankage and that is interesting not only in what concerns
monohull versus cat but in general terms: They have 560L
water tankage but they only fill it to half capacity. No need of more with the
watermaker and it is an unnecessary load.
All in all very interesting. thanks for having posted it
