Us oldies would remember Aussie slang once being referred to as "Ocker".

Aren't they from New Zealand?

Although I've never listened to the audio closely as I said, that's not what I watch them for.

The brothers are American, one of the girlfriends is from NZ and the other is from Sweden.

They have spent a good amount of time in AU and NZ so perhaps they picked up some speech habits.

Yep - used to be the preferred cigarette of choice of the bogan class, (Winfield Blue) probably because Paul Hogan used to advertise them, it was also a rule that the packet had to be carried rolled into the t-shirt sleeve.

For the thought police here - not suggesting people should smoke, this is a cultural discussion. Hogan himself stongly regrets the adds

Quote:
"Yeah, we were encouraging people to smoke," Hogan says. "At the time, 1971 or something, they used to say: 'Doctors recommend …' or 'Nine out of 10 smokers prefer…' We were all being conned. When they put the medical warning in there I said, 'I'm going to get out of this.'
"Young ones were taking up smoking and all going for Winfield. It was a staggering success but I was a drug dealer. But who knew then?

Re: S/V Delos discusses mono vs. cat with cruising couple.

Great interview.

As others have said, nothing new, but putting all together the less biased cat/mono comparison I have ever saw and that is due to the cat owners that are really very nice guys and completely out of that wave: cats are better than monohulls or the other way around.

An interesting thing that I had already noticed in practical terms, regarding speed on passage between cats and monohulls, for instance on the ARC. Between a performance cat and a performance monohull passage times are not different on the ARC but the cat can be sailed faster if one is just having fun with it for sometime, so why is that?

I had already found the right answer but it is nice to see it confirmed by a an experienced owner of a performance cat: Monohulls while cruising are sailed to the average wind, and the gusts are absorbed by excessive heeling without any problem, catamarans, that have not that safety absorbing power, are sailed to the max gusts.

That means in many cases sailed to less 5 to 10k wind. It is normal to have 20k wind gusting 30K for instance. That is a huge difference and it explains why theoretically faster boats can have a cruising speed on passage similar to apparently slower boats.

Very nice also the advantage and disadvantages regarding having two or one engine. Nice also regarding water tankage and that is interesting not only in what concerns monohull versus cat but in general terms: They have 560L water tankage but they only fill it to half capacity. No need of more with the watermaker and it is an unnecessary load.

All in all very interesting. thanks for having posted it

Re: S/V Delos discusses mono vs. cat with cruising couple.

Also, from the same guys, very interesting comparison in what regards cruising speed between cats and monohulls.

Really slow monohull (older model Amel) versus really fast performance cat (Baramundi) not very different in size, both upwind, first with light then with medium wind, with surprising results, at least for some:

The Amel are known to have a not very good performance upwind even compared with Bavarias, not mentioning performance monohulls, that have a way better performance than a Bavaria.

Re: S/V Delos discusses mono vs. cat with cruising couple.

LMAO!!!! 15 knots apparent wind at 60 degrees and less than 9 knots boat speed, and you reckon that's "really fast performance cat"! (Albeit one without daggerboards?)

And you say you have no bias? LMAO! ROFLMAO!

Re: S/V Delos discusses mono vs. cat with cruising couple.

Ahem, if the Barramundi is a Really Fast Performance cat, I will walk backwards to Bourke.

And before Barramundi owners get all cranky at me - I didn't say they were a slow or bad bat - just that REALLY fast they are not

You guys sometimes surprise me. It is a LeRouge design and LeRouge does not design condo cats. The Barramundi 470 weights only 14 100lbs and yes it does not have daggerboards but considerably deep keels for a cat with 7' 6".

Compare it with a Lagoon 47 that weights almost the double and has keels almost half the size (20 569lbs and 4'5" draft keels) and that even so carries a lot less sail upwind ( 1274sqft to 1540sqft).

Yes, I would say, like Eric LeRouge or their owners, that the Barramundi 470 is a performance cruising cat, a fast cat, not a condo cat and besides I thought that Lagoons and other condo cats sailed well upwind

I am surprised that you don't know this Barramundi and yes, it is a fast cruising cat as it is common knowledge. The Barramundi has been substituted by Le Rouge by a derived design, the ViK, he says about the boat: "We therefore named Vik our updated range of fast cruising catamarans who prefer beautiful savage shores to crowded marinas."

Until someone defines "fast" I'm going to stock up on
