Rudder Bearing Replacment on cat

Anyone who has replaced the bottom rudder bearing on a FP cat- can tell me how to remove the old bearing , without destroying the metal fram it in, be a big help thanks

not sure about the FP cat,but generally rudder bearings fit in through a slot machined into the lower face of the ball shaped housing then are turned 90 degrees so the shaft hole lines up and the ball shaped bearing is locked in place by the shaft.

to remove; turn bearing 90 degrees vertically then it should be able to slide out

the rounded bearing (lower right) fits into the elongated slot in the face of the housing(left) then is turned 90 degrees

What kind of bearings do you have? What atoll described is correct if you have JP3 Type 1 bearings.

Here is what I have, apparently, Mine is glued in, looks just like whT you have there without the flange to screw it in, Jp said I have to cut them out, and not prepared for that this time, Cant get even good expoxie here, so zi put it all back together, Good to see you guys are still kicking Im doing good, been using facebook instead of CF, my name there is Ram Om of Greenacres, friend me,,,, well cant post a picture, but Thanks anyway Atoll and Guys, its gonna have to wait till next haul out, its a little noisie at anchor but looks safe

I have the same style bearings and housings and have replaced the spherical, plastic bearings and have helped other owners replace the housings. The only reason you'd have to "cut it out" is if you need to replace the bearing housing. The white plastic bearing will rotate inside the housing and you align the flat top and bottom with the slots in the housing to pull it out. It may be difficult to rotate, you just have to work it free. JP3 does not keep drilled bearings on the shelf - you specify the diameter of your shaft that sits in the bearing and they custom drill them to order. The housings come in different sizes and this is how you ID the bearings. To determine the housing size measure the OD of what you see and back track it using that dimension to pick out the size from JP3's online information. Replacing the housings is not that difficult. You would have to repair any hull damage from removing the old housing, then just glue in the new housing with 5200, taking care to maintain the same vertical dimensions.

so your saying all i hve to do is rotate he bearing and slip it out and a new one in, ??i have the bearings already,that makes sence

Yes. That is what you need to do. A piece of wood and a hammer for persuasion help.

Wow, that was easy, Iwant to thank you Guys I really appreciate the help...i had to cut through about a foot of stone as the rudder was longer than the ground,that took 4 hours the first time around, and was a disappointment that i could not do it, fearing id screw it up with out a housing, so i put it back together and figured next time, I came back here on CF and two hulls ,Dave your post allowed me to understand how it was done so i dug the hole out dropped the rudder and had the whole job done in 1/2 hour THANKS to Dave,Atoll SV Neko and the rest of you guys
