Replacement daggerboard
So I find that i have a broken daggerboard on my 2002 Outremer 45.
What's the best plan to replace this? Is it something that needs to come from the factory, or can any competent fiberglass outfit make me a new one?
Thanks for any input.
John

Re: Replacement daggerboard
For production boats I'd recommend getting one from the factory, what's wrong with it though?

Re: Replacement daggerboard
A fellow cruiser had severely damaged his port daggerboard on his Catana 47 a few yrs back and had a quote from Catana of over US$5k for a replacement. He ended up going to a fiberglass shop in (South Africa) and had a new one constructed for a ¼ of Catana's price. While this was in SA where the Rand is low, if you have the time and short on cash, then Yes, they can be constructed by a experienced fiberglass shop. Your damaged one can be used as a template and taken apart to review the frame construction.

Re: Replacement daggerboard
If Outemer's is anything like Catana's then only a cheap copy can be built cheap. They are frameless empty ones - few laminators can build you a copy but nearly any laminator can build you a basic solid substitute that will take you from A to B without hiccups.

Re: Replacement daggerboard
That was my reason for asking about the extent of the damage.

Re: Replacement daggerboard
$5K sounds very reasonable to me.

If it includes delivery and fitting, then... still pricey. I'd say 50% profit, at least.
If delivery and fitting isn't included, then IMO that's very expensive.
Any competent glassing outfit should be able to make one.

I note plenty of such repairs at the Boatworks, Coomera, Australia.

Re: Replacement daggerboard
We just had a new one built for our C-36 trimaran at Phil's Foils in Canada; it's on its way here now.

Re: Replacement daggerboard
Thanks to everyone for their input
I will check the factory to see how much and how long it takes to get a board, plus I'll try and get some local quotes.
To answer one of the questions, I don't know exactly how it failed, we were going upwind and when we arrived the outer skin had split off for the lower 40% allowing the inner core to break.so the board was split down the middle.
Thanks,
Johm

Re: Replacement daggerboard
The Catch: Strong enough to do the job, but not so strong that if you hit something with it, the trunk fails before the board does. Ditto on the loads which it produces in terms of lift. You want plenty, so that you go upwind well. But having a board that's stronger than the trunk, or the structure which the board is tied to would be a bad idea.

Re: Replacement daggerboard
Uncivilized has it right.
Phil's Foils is good. Or just have someone locally use the other board as a plug to make a mold and make a new one.

Re: Replacement daggerboard
I have a 03 , and the weight of the board s makes me think they are solid. Have you been able to determine that . Did you have a good hit on the board that perhaps caused a de lamination

Re: Replacement daggerboard
Dont think 5K USD is expensive for a big board. The first is for a big Catana being fitted at the Gold Coast, the small one under repair is for a Catana 42 in Martinique, and will break again ...
