Relacing an Outremer 40/43

Sometime in the future, we are likely to replace Tomahawk. (PS please do not let her know).

We want the same speed but a bit more space and easier living. Looking around, it seems most cats have become floating caravans with an emphasis on space rather than sailing boats. We don't want to go to a really big thing.

Anyone got some good suggestions?

Well, there are plenty of options provided that you have the budget for it. As you know, when you want both speed and comfort (more space) combined, you need more $$$$$$$..


For around K 500 $ you may have a look on;
-new Outremer 45
-O4 by Eric Lerouge
-second hand Outremer 49 or Freydis 49
-second hand Catana 43 or 47 ft

If the budget is lower,

-earlier versions of Lagoon 57,
-even earlier models of Catana

In the second case, you will probably have to spend some extra to put the boat in order but it will be cheaper than the ones at the top of the list.

Lots of options for the question... New or 2nd hand is another story but I would be tempted to look at the Balance 526, Freeflow 52 or Freydis 49.. all quick boats.
Then of course getting a bit slower with more space is the Cantana or maybe even the St Francis or Discovery 50...
The balancing act between performance vs luxury is a very personal one though...

The obvious choice apart from the later Outremers is Dazcat. There are a few secondhand around the UK also designed and new built in UK. Should be no lack of performance and comfort.

I'd recommend a second-hand Freyis designed by Eric Lerouge. They come in lengths of 46' - 49' and are fast and seaworthy.

Darn, for several years the 40/43 was our dream boat. Looked at several, made offers on 2, but it never came together.

We looked at Outremer, Le Rouge, Schionning, and Chris White. Replacing an Outremer won't be easy, but there are a number of these on the market at reasonable prices for what they are. The Outremer Lights are a bit tight on space, but the Standards might suit you.

would have more space than your 40/43 has

The budget should be quite good... ( this depends on plan A working).

We only sail two up so we really don't want anything bigger than 40 odd feet long as it is more than we need and the sails start to get way to big to handle easily.

For the money involved in the kinds of boats that everyone seems to be talking about, you might look into a semi/full custom boat of, say, 12-14m
The Dazcat's a good suggestion, as are LeRouge's designs, plus heaps of others. Including plenty of kit boats, available in various stages of construction.

Also, keep in mind, that if you chose to go down, & or explore this road, that one of the biggest cost factors is labor. So where you have a boat built, or finished, inluences things greatly.

I think that going such a route is doable (fiscally), given that it sounds like you want a boat with pretty simple systems. Which is where a lot of the $ in production cats is tied up... Well, that, & the extra; hull, sails, rigging, & engines needed to carry said "necessities".

Outreamer 55s are really not that big (mostly long overhanging hulls)

One of the guys on here (Kiwi) sails his single handed, they can be bought very well priced and extra money saved could be spent on a good reefing system.

If you have the funds, I would be interested in what you can find or have built in that 40' size that would perform like what you are used to.

Hehe its all relative i guess c man. was berthed alongside a 55 a few months back so had a good long look and a chat to the owner. I know what your saying about long hulls vs bridgedeck but I would say its a huge handful to singlehand compared to my 42 foot phisa/ catana or tomahawks outie. Great boat but personally i would not want to put to sea solo (as opposed to say a daysail with known weather) due to loads involved and the **** happens scenarios. The owner insisted on 2 fit crew plus himself and he was an ex racer.

Kiwi must be one of those "rambo sailors" from the posts on aft helms

Personally I would recommend the older catanas tomahawk - still good performance but with better accommodations and load carrying trade offs for longer distance cruising.
