Prout 50 Quasar capacities

Hi!
I have a 1980 Quasar and I get a little confused about how much the fresh water capacity is.
Reading different specifications it says 2 X 100 imp gallons (appr 900 ltrs), but as far as I can see, from the time
I have sailed her, I would rather say 2 X 50 imp gallons (450 ltrs)...at the most. Since only water in her keels, I can't
see where she could keep all that water that is supposed to be there.
Does anyone have the correct numbers in this or does it maybe differ depending on what particular boat it is?
Another question...does anyone know what load capacity the Quasar has, that is how much necessary or
unnecessary junk can I load her with on a longer journey?
Thank you,
Rolf Dahlberg,
Sweden

I don't have the load figures but the water tanks are shown to be 240 US gallons or 910 liters. Fuel is 120 US gallons or 450 liters. Sure you're not using the fuel tanks for water? Bridge clearance 20.35 m. Toss the weight and get there faster!

Re: Prout 50 Quasar capacities

Well, the water tanks are in the keel part of the hulls, and the strange thing is that looking inside them throuh the inspection holes, I have a hard time believing that 450 litres should get in each of them there.
About tossing the stuff...wise enough, but we will probably need some stuff when moving on board and the question is approximately how much she can carry.
Losing weight wouldn't do that much to this lady, she is slow regardless, but takes us were we want. The bridge deck clearance though could be an issue if overloaded.

Re: Prout 50 Quasar capacities

The only thing I could find lists the displacement at 19,000 pounds or 8550kg. You could have it weighed next time you haul it out and see how close you are. The new company probably inherited the information in their archives somewhere.

Re: Prout 50 Quasar capacities

Well I actually weighed the boat when putting it in the Swedish Ships Register, and the displacement was 12 tons, appr 26,000 pounds, so that is quite a lot more than 19,000.
I have seen different numbers on what the displacement should be, but noone as low as 19,000 and noone as high as 26,000, so the boat is probably already partly stuffed with various equipment. But not so that it should add more than 2,000 - 3,000 pounds, as far as I can see.

Anyway, it isn't that important to get the correct numbers, it would just have been fun to get an idea of how the Prout Company had thought about it.

Re: Prout 50 Quasar capacities

By way of comparison the smaller Prout 45 (late '90s) was rated around 21,500 lbs to 23,000 lbs and carried 160 Imp gallons (about 700l) of water in two keel tanks.

So that 19,000 does look very low.

You'll have to take it up with Chris White, that's the displacement he published in his book.

Re: Prout 50 Quasar capacities

Perhaps it should have been 29,000? Best to verify with other owners. Some of the better brokers might know.

I know of one Quasar. She is owned by a fella named Louis, and is at the Frank Patti yards in Pensacola, Florida. Perhaps if you contact Patti Marine Enterprises and ask after Louis, you can get contact information and speak to him directly

Very helpful again Tamicatana. Nothing like asking the man that owns one....

Re: Prout 50 Quasar capacities

The problem is that I know two guys who own (owned) Quasars, but they are of the newer (and wider) type, and from these guys I got information that water should be 2 x 100 gallons...but I wonder if my older and narrower one has other and smaller volumes.
The best thing though would probably be to fill one tank and then empty it, while checking with a bucket or so, the exact amount that comes out. Then I would know for a fact.
