Some shots of the new headliner.

The salon is three wood panels about 8' long. The step down is covered 1/4" foam over the fiberglass hull, then more covered wood panels for the sides and "wing?" areas.
The forward berth shows where we seamed the vinyl before putting it up.
The 20" skylight has been replaced with a second Goit hatch.
The forward cabin has homemade welting to cover the seam at the top. With a little better planing I could have avoided that, but what can I say. This is a learning experience.

The current Privilege range doesn't use bolts, everything is bonded using Dow BETASEAL

I know this because, well, actually, one of my windows came unbonded. That was 4 years ago and it was repaired under warranty. No problem since then.

Hi Philip

My boat was less than two years old at the time and as it only happened on one window it was clearly a fault at construction time. So, yes, it was repaired under warranty while the boat was in the BVI.

It is worth noting that that leaky window and a faulty fuel tank guage were the ONLY things that needed rectifying. Privilege build a high quality product.

Russ,

Nice job with the new headliner. I am envious. When I get down to the nitty gritty of replacing my headliner, I will pay you a visit.

Thanks for the photos.

There is hope!

Thanks Russ, I appreciate your thorough description and information. This makes sense, since there's not a whole bunch of structure otherwise. It sounds like what the surveyor was talking about was the case for newer boats, but who knows if anything changed structurally to help support that. Great info, thanks!

Did you use any particular type of Lexan? The "XL" type seems to be pretty popular/common with UV protection, but I'm not sure if it comes in various shades of darkness. With the huge amount of solar gain these boats have, that's a consideration for us. We do have cloth shades for the outside, but still...

Thanks again!!

Philip... Zero scratching after 5 years with the outside shades attached.

Hi Philip - Is crazing of the lexan windows a common problem on the Privilege boats? I ask because this is a common problem on the Catana 431 and 471/2. Very predictable. But on Catanas it's limited to flat windows. Curved lexan seems immune. Just curious what the Privilege knowledge base might be on this topic.

Hi scotte,
I used the "solar grey" lexan that was in stock.
I wish now that I had done some research into the silicone and UV options.

BTW, I enjoyed your web site.
I am envious of those shaft drives.
I don't know if I will ever get comfortable with the sail drives that are on my boat.

Our windows have lots of scratches in them, but I don't know the cause (they are 18 years old). We have two sets of covers for the corner windows - a full cloth covering (like we do for the 3 main windows) along with a mesh that allows some light through. I can't see that the covers would cause as much of a problem as walking on them when dirty (and grinding in grit).

My hypotheses is that it's a materials issue and an exposure issue, but I could be wrong. Certain windows have this problem (including curved panels), and others do not. In some cases there is a clear difference in sun exposure, but in others not. For example, in our forward berths we have two hatches above the bad - a large one and a small one. Both small ones are crazed, the big ones are not, and they are right next to each other with the same exposure. All the Goiot ports along the side are similarly crazed, where other hatches are not. It's possible that a previous owner replaced some of the hatches, however this boat has been in the Americas since the early 90s, yet all the hatches have the EC logo suggestion European origin. My materials hypothesis is that materials vary somewhat and some (like all our hatches) are of a better material than others (like all the ports).

I think I'll definitely do some research on materials, something that blocks UV and provides some level of insulation from the sun seems like it would be worthwhile. Thanks! We've been enjoying her immensely, and are happy with the shaft drives for sure.

I will be following Gideons reccomendation on another thread and be using the Marguard Lexan. UV resistant and anti-scratch treated.

Regards
