Prices! Material, Man-Hours, Local Prices (Kit-Catamaran)

If you want to build a catamaran from drawings or from a kit. And lives where i lives (sweden). I think the materialprices and if you need help, the prices is to high).

So for me i think the best way (if i will build a catamaran) is to let a boatbuilder build the boat. From drawings or a kit.

Where should i go...South Africa, Australia/NZ or europe...poland? Estonia, Latvia...?

Any ideas on companys with good reputation on building cats!?

I don´t know more than what i find at schionnings homepage.

Fusion 40, Spirited 380, Oceanic 373 or Oram 44C or simular.....

And i can´t build a boat at home in a tent, without freeze to death in the winter.

It will take 4000 to 6000 man hours to built a 12 meter catamaran. Most who begin a project of this size never complete it as it's a Herculean endeavor. I have the upmost respect for those who do manage it.

With this in mind, an Asian boatyard would be the most cost effect place to have one constructed. I believe some of the Australian builders are already doing this.

6000 Hours! It´s 750days and 8 hours each day. 2 Year! And this time is probably only real buildingtime. All time to get material and all phonecalls and all calculations and thinking not inc.

The biggest problem is to trust and let a yard build the boat when you are at home. Thats why i trying to find some good yards with good reputation on this kind of job.

Just a thought. Is CE certification important for you. If it is it may limit your choices a little.
There is a CE certified 14.8 meter Wilderness that is nearly finished to motor away stage. Painted outside and fully faired and primer coated inside. Has hatches, portlights and 37Hp Nannis already installed. Listed for 400k AUD The estimate to completion was around 700k I think, depending on what is required. People build multihulls in tents in cold climates all the time. You insulate the tent with foam boards or mylar/bubble insulation. Kelsall, Oram, Woods, and I all design for relatively easy building, and there are others who do, too, I am sure. Hard chine or radius chine boats are designed to be easy to build. I remember seeing videos of people building a harryproa in Norway or Sweden north of the arctic circle. Not that you should build a boat if you aren't so inclined--

Not sure what your budget is to build a new cat, but with the hours you are talking and materials it sounds like at least $300,000-$500,000.... ? How about a used cat? A 90's Lagoon 37 built by TPI is a great boat. Last I saw you could get one of these out of charter for about $150,000 US or less. Replace both engines and both sails and you are in it less than $200K. Just a thought...... you are embarking on a difficult project.... would you rather be arguing with your boatbuilder or sailing?

The 5000 to 6000 hours figure is pretty right. That's why the things cost so much to buy. With some build methods, ie Farrier F41, the numbers can go even higher.

You can go somewhere labour is cheaper, but it's also usually unskilled, and you'd need to be on hand to supervise closely.
