Post Market Swim Platform

My husband saw the new FP Astrea at the MIA Boat Show last month and one of the features he liked was the hydraulic swim platform. I know there is some controversy regarding it. We are looking at it as a modification to accommodate my husbands handicap. He had a very bad accident, broke his knee into 9 pieces, and now has some arthritis. He can't straighten it and often limps. He has a really difficult time getting in and out of the dinghy because of it. The swim platform would make this so much easier for him as we could lower it to a level where he could easily step in, alleviating a major source of stress for him, and potentially protect him from slipping and hurting his knee further.

We are not going to purchase the Astrea for a variety of reasons and instead will buy one used. I'm wondering if there is a company that has these for post market installations? Someone must make the ones they are putting on the production cats these days. Do we know who makes those? I'd like to look into pricing and what is involved in installing them.

I have googled and the only ones I can find are more for power boats where they flip up... we would want one that raises up and down.

Thanks in advance.

Scarlet,

I am a partner in a fabrication shop in NorCal. We can make a custom unit. (May be cheaper than you think.)
Pm if you want me to give you a free quote.

Freedom Lift and TNT Lift both make some hydraulic dinghy solutions; dunno if those were what he saw, but you could check those out...

I looked at both those brands, and from what I saw on their websites, it looked like they were more like those fold down platforms that you see on power boats, or (monohulls)... I tried sending TNT a message from their website, but it registered an error. I'll try again today.

I have seen a folding SS handrail installed on hard dinghy
's like my Walker Bay. Having similar issues I'm looking attractive that as a possible solution

IIRC, the Freedom Lift brand is a pair of hydraulic arms that comprise a davit-like system... that just happens to be underneath the dinghy in some installations. Maybe not all installations; could maybe have the dinghy hanging from it...

The TNT Lift seems to me to be an actual (swim) platform, so it'd have chocks for a dinghy.

Something like that.

So, I reached out to Tenderlift. Their price is approx 29000 EUR... plus VAT and shipping... just incase someone is interested in selling a kidney for one.. lol.

For comparison... The one that comes with the new Astrea is $19,000 (as put on by the factory)

Re: Post Market Swim Platform

My wife had a knee replacement and also serious inner ear-related balance problems. We found that by lashing the dinghy to the inside of the sugar scoops, boarding was very easy. The davit lift tackle make a good hand hold, which can be the main thing. It also works with my 90-year old parents.

I'd be concerned about the extra weight aft, but I'm a performance guy.

But I agree that functional ergonomics are the most important feature of a boat if you have mobility problems. There is nothing else that matters.

Hi Scarlet,

You could get in touch with Jorge Garcia from CBS Services in Grenada. He is working on developing a platform with a number of smart features that might work for you. His email is info@cbsgrenada.com.
I hope this helps!
