Re: Poor seamanship ??

Deep, narrow hulls and lots of projected area across the bridge deck and lots of windage and undersized engines and shallow draft without good directional stability = horrible bar boat???

I can read italian pretty well; I didn't see anywhere such finding. Nevertheless, having watched the video several times, it seemed to me that at certain point the engine/s have stopped or lost powered.
Or, the skipper could have cut the throttle for some reason. (fear to go up against the high waves ??) That's probably why the boat lost the steering and came beam to swells which is a recipie to disaster..

Cheers

These guys had Buckley’s chance of getting out weather they had 4 engines let alone two working engines one of the big problems here is the shifting sand bar and also where the fuel dock is located just inside the outer entrance where port control filmed them when the seas are in this state the water just hurtles back out after hitting the fuel dock wall I refuse to fuel up there and fuel up on the other side of dock if room is available or head down to the Treve river

Re: Poor seamanship ??

patrol boat reported right (stb?) engine broke but does not say when it happened.

Prontamente interveniva la motovedetta CP 834 della Capitaneria di porto di Roma, comandata dal 2° Capo Scelto Np Vincenzo Tizzano, constatando l’avaria del motore destro e lo stato di semi affondamento del catamarano,

from video, it looks like boat loses port (left?) engine as that is the direction the bow is shoved. hard to tell what happened.

I suspect a failure in skipper's right frontal lobe ... or maybe the left...

Actually cats are generally pretty good bar boats.

Re: Poor seamanship ??

I have left harbors in conditions like that when I was less experienced and more stupid. I never had such problems, however -- I was always careful to have enough way on not to be taken aback by the seas like that. You do need some speed, and plenty of power on. I can't believe that cat didn't have enough power -- maybe really engine failure?

Re: Poor seamanship ??

I would prefer to be on mono in these conditions because of inertia and much less exposure against waves.. See this:

But definately on a cat the otehr way around because of much better directional stability of the cat. And see this:

Perfect seamanship BTW in both cases..

Cheers

Re: Poor seamanship ??

Can't say I agree I see perfect seamanship in both cases. The best seamanship is not put yourself there, on purpose, in the first place.

Re: Poor seamanship ??

By the way, here's the proper way to cross a bar:

I wonder if it is possible to do what the video instructs with a sailboat, especially during entering. Does a sailboat have enough power/speed to stay on the back hump of a wave? Does anyone know?

Re: Poor seamanship ??

Ah those Kiwis with their understated highly technical terms... dangerous, kinda dangerous, pretty dangerous, a bit dangerous.....
I don't know about anyone else but my old school boat designed by S&S can easily cross those bars planing at 20 knots

ok that's a joke. No, unless you have an ultralight boat with plenty of wind that can plane at the same speed as the waves it's gonna be in the "very dangerous" category.
