I would suggest using this site as a starting point. Read the material, take advantage of the contacts, Use the links and info available through this site, and, if you are inclined to make this an official attempt, qualify, sign up, and go for the award.

Try Jimmy Cornell's "World Cruising Routes" which gives directions between major ports all over the world, along with the best and worst time to make the runs. A good way to take a fast look at ways to get from "here to there".

Allright thanks, I'll look into that, Kai I looked at regestering an attempt but I don't know for example what kind of boat I will have and so on so I'll wait till I know More.

Thanks Kai I was thinking more of going through the panama canal and the red sea insted of the high latitudes, (to cold for my taste). but thanks for the link it has given me an idea of how much food I will need.

I saw that you are 16 yo, and my girlfriends daughters are 16 and 19 and they only thinking of themself and makeup. So i am impressed about this kind of thinking.

Zac Sunderland is hoping to be the youngest person to solo-sail around the world.

Zac Sunderland is admittedly nervous but experiencing no second thoughts, he assures, as he counts down to what promises to be one of the greatest adventures a 16-year-old could imagine.

His tone is soft, unconvincing, until his eyes widen as he lists some of his intended destinations ... the Solomon Islands, Australia, Papua New Guinea, the Galapagos Islands.

"I'm going to see the world," he declared, smiling bravely despite the daunting task ahead.

On June 14, the high school sophomore from Thousand Oaks, Calif., is planning to leave family and friends -- but stow his schoolbooks aboard -- to embark on a yearlong voyage around the world. (His initial itinerary had him leaving Saturday, but a broken gear-box seal has delayed the trip.)

The oldest of seven children, Zac aspires to be the youngest person to solo-sail around the world and the only person to complete the journey before turning 18. He'll have until January 2010 to break the record held by David Dicks, who left Australia when he was 17, in 1996, and returned nine months later when he was 18 years, 41 days old.

$6,000 and a dream

Home will be a 36-foot Islander purchased for $6,000 -- money saved since he was a child. Bed will be a narrow bunk he'll secure himself into each night, so he doesn't roll off.

When an alarm sounds, it'll either be time to wake up or to evade large ships.

His diet will include freeze-dried food, vitamins, malaria pills and other medications required of global travel.

"I just got my yellow-fever shot yesterday," Zac boasted from the Los Angeles docks on a recent afternoon.

That will be his point of departure and return, and where he and his father have worked tirelessly to ensure a seaworthy, well-provisioned vessel.

"I'm excited to contribute to something my son wants to do," said Laurence Sunderland, a longtime shipwright and yachtsman. "The big issue these days is that fathers and sons seem to be so far apart. ... It's great that Zac has chosen to do this."
