Owners Version - or Modify Eight Berths ?

Does anyone have any first hand experience in converting the internals of an 8 berth ex-charter cat to better suit a cruising couple? There a plenty of charter boats available but very few owners versions which commonly have a 30% premium due to supply/demand and less wear and tear. Given the plastic moldings I assume this would not be easy or inexpensive, but on, say $300K this might mean an outlay of $50K and a saving of $40K that could be spent on replacing sails, engine refurbishment etc.

Re: Owners version or modify eight berths?

Greetings and welcome aboard the CF, Summersail.

The economics of a major refit, such as you propose, seldom match the estimated costs (and schedule).

Thanks for the advice. I guess my point is more exactly that the owners versions are also not where I want to position my boat (Europe) and that the specs indicate some very old equipment in the inventory - you need to take both in the sale - which will still require replacement/upgrade costs on top of 3 cabin layout.

Re: Owners Version - or Modify Eight Berths ?

I think it is highly variable depending on the particular boat. In other words, some boats convert quite well and I've seen some folks that did nicely taking an ex-charter vessel and turning it into an owner's boat. I think cats would generally be easier to convert. A lot of folks just take those big double cabins in the hulls and turn them into storage rooms or workshops. Myself, having owned a cat, I think it might be a good idea to keep at least one sleeping space in a hull and aft for offshore use.
