Owned More Than One Type of Multihull ?

this is my second thread in multihull sailboats, my first thread: ''consider ideal liveaboard situation''
was moved few days ago to classified adds. I have owned a beautifull GPRS Wharram Tiki30, which i still
miss for its easy island hopping capability next to sailing like a song. I now liveaboard a Catalac10m in
North Mozambique, Quirimbas archipelago and thise who know both types of multihull know that James Wharram
for one would call my present one ''a cottage on the water''. My steep learning curve sailing, liveaboarding,
yacht management, owning two completely different cats, trying to do a lot with limited funds and input of
other multihullers with their experience should be very informative for all us double canoers
WHY BOUGHT FIRST MULTI? DID IT LIVE UP TO EXPECTATION? WHY BOUGHT OTHER MULTIHULL? HOW DO YOU RATE THAT ONE?
LIVEABOARD ON THEM? MANAGING SAIL/AUXILIARIES/ENERGY/WATER/STOWAGE/DINGHY/ETC?

i got the Tiki 30 to get my sailing skills back after not sailing few years because of working in interior of Africa. It was the right choice, even liveaboard her was great, although more like camping. Who said sunsets of 26 footer or 70 footer look the same.

I noticed your other post and support the move of that thread.

To answer a few of your new questions:
- I bought my first multihull 45 years ago. Reason was "for speed". I am still a "speed junkie" down at heart.
- My list of multihulls in a life which took a few turns to inland destinations and overseas places looks like this in order of purchase:
1) "La Bamba": Flying Kitten - 4.5m cat (similar to the Shearwater)
2) "Jacaranda": Nimble 30 - trimaran cruiser
3) Hobie 14
4) "Coco de Mer": 16.5m one-off ex-racing trimaran converted to fast cruising
5) "Cocktail": Lengthened Kelsall K28 cruising trimaran - 9m overall
6) "Sitatunga": 9.5m open bridgedeck Woods catamaran
7) "Burnout": 10.2m one-off Oldenziel cruising catamaran on which I am living the cruising life since 18 months and still adapting / improving the boat. Currently I am in the Med, planning to sail from Spain to Israel this year. I have solar panels (to be increased) and a wind generator, both of which are needed in my humble opinion.

I have also extensively cruised on / chartered the following:
- Fountain Pajot "Maldives" - 9.6m catamaran
- Lerouge "Azuli" - 11.2m catamaran
- "Catana 40" catamaran - 12m catamaran
- Schionning "Radical Bay 8000" bi-rig catamaran - 8m open bridgedeck catamaran
- "Spirited 380" catamaran - 11.7m catamaran.

My dream multihull for cruising? Either a 14m Hughes trimaran or a 14m bi-rigged wave-piercing catamaran to my design specs.

This is quite a list and it looks like you know those yachts intimately. It is this intimate knowledge of your multihull(s) which we wnat to drill into. Like i could talk about my tiki30's rudders which kept falling apart because of poor epoxy repairs, giving out the job to so-called expert to find my repair solved the problem, and how the rope lashing of the rudders to the hull with 6mm dacron had to be done right, consistent tying, leave just enough play for rudder to turn properly and tiller feeling smooth. The Wharram lashing together of the cats structural parts amazed me in itsa simplicity and the elasticity which prevented forces, waves, wind energy, to climb aboard and break things.

And a very informative website it is, i only discovered it after acquiring the Catalac10m i liveaboard now. So you have reference points to compare your catalac sail qualities etc I miss my Wharram tiki 30 for its lightness but have done amazing sailing in my catalac10m for the reason that i seem to have bad luck with weather whenever i attempt overnight passage. She takes it in her stride though.

Yes I guess I / we all know what's on your mind - especially on Wharrams! It's called BOATS.
- On my current boat I lost my one central rudder just before the approach to the Hoek van Holland harbour entrance and needed to be towed in. Had it professionally repaired.
Then I was on my singlehanding way from England to Spain across the Bay of Biscay when I noticed my repaired rudder moving away from the transom - got back into port with safe sailing but this time we did a better repair job ( I was involved), at the same costs!
- Now I find my mast securing points need re-inforcing, another biggish job.
- And what about my fridge which does not like a warm climate?

When I'm all sorted I'll pop in to you on my way to Cape Town!

How about a proa - a mix in my opinion which fits neither here or there when you take the sailing characteristics into account!

you make very good point, it will help us all to understand our multihull sailboats
i for now just want to point out we have professional custom built, self-built, factory built, different types of hulls, different types of materials used for the hulls and rigging (ie. alu, wooden, carbon masts), different rigging types, pdeigree sailors with small auxiliaries, motor sailors, evolution in design from the early 70ties, .....and more criteria that we can use to create a listing of types of multihulls...

So I suppose I could reasonably say that the endeavour, and wild oats are the same type of boat?
