Outremer 51 - so I took a test sail

Yesterday I was lucky enough to go for a sail aboard a new Outremer51. We had a nice 15knt wind out of the east and what an amazing ride. Feeling the acceleration & speed on this boat is different than anything I've experienced sailing short of a Hobie Cat. With both boards half way down down and the wind at 40degrees off our starboard bow we were clipping along at 10+ knots touching 11 a couple of times...what a fun boat to sail, I can see why they have a 2 year wait right now to get one of these sexy ladies.

What other boats from actual manufactures (not plans you buy and then have the boat built i.e. Chris White or Schionning ) are available on the market that would compete with them?

The st Francis maybe? The open 40?

Was the 51 you tested loaded? I've been curious about how these cats perform when loaded for cruising.

So cool you got to test it.

Yes it was loaded for cruising, but not stocked to the gills.

The St. Francis is more cruiser vs. performance from what I can tell...but the Open 46...now that one may be a contender.

Nice to see those speeds with some load. The St Francis is definitely set up for cruising but the speeds I've seen online are quite impressive and comparable to the O51 and 0X.
But if you want pure speed check out the SIGs.

St Francis or nautitech compared to O51 ?! You must be joking ? I would suggest you have a second look at the specs of those boats. Hopefully you are not including the 5X in this comparison (not sure what you meant with "0X"). As for the SIG that's also a very different boat. It is quite hard to find a comparison to an outremer, maybe some schionning ? You would need to put the price in the equation for a fair comparison though...

The Rapier 400 and Rapier 550 are high performance cats (check the weight and displacement, and YouTube videos) very suitable for warm water cruising, with their open saloons/cockpits.

e.g. SIG catamarans, or TS catamarans:

Catamaran TS42 - Chantiers Marsaudon Composites

I think Gunboats easily too.

SIG, only one model 45, very fast, very expensive, but not even a saloon.
TS 52.8, yeah why not, about the same price I believe, but much faster and with quite a bit less comfort.
Gunboat, quite comparable on speed and comfort but price wise not so much...

At least you are listing cats with daggerboards

Re: Outremer 51 - so I took a test sail

Salon this salon that you want another house on the water or a boat that can sail?

;-)

Seriously though no salon in SIG but that huge bridge deck to entertain a HUGE party while in the West Indies or Polynesia ... you would reign in the anchorage.

I like SIG layout actually, I think it could be pretty much better than sailing two monohulls at once.

There are some nice TS vids on tube too. Making 17kts plus without any effort. The small one is pretty new.

Some cruising cats can go 15kts + too (e.g. some Catanas will) but it takes plenty of wind to drive one that fast. These lighter French toys go faster, sooner. That's the whole magic.

I think they match the wind speed in light winds, eh?

Here's a picture of the Sig 45 salon. I like it but probably not up to most people's expectations for a 45' cat.

Re: Outremer 51 - so I took a test sail

I test sailed the outremer 51 about a month back out of ft. Lauderdale. We had similar conditions and experienced similar performance. Also the feel was definitely hobie like especially in the tiller seats. Loved the boat.

Most people neither can nor want to sail at 20 knots either.

The only reason I am not sailing one is that I do not have this amount of money yet.

The way I see this design is that the bridgedeck is actually under-utilised. So, in my book, a lovely weekend boat but not sure about longer offshore adventures.

Re: Outremer 51 - so I took a test sail

The first Rapido 60 was launched this week (at least I think it's hull #1). If anything I think it will be faster than the Outreamer.

Re: Outremer 51 - so I took a test sail

Outeremer are really the only production cat builder with the runs on the board so to speak and plenty of boats out sailing , and sailing fast . I can bet you won't find many of them in charter fleets which is a testimonial to their performance,
