Outremer 50s

Thinking of the outremer 50s. Seems like it sails wonderfully. Price isn't horrible in the used market. Somewhere between 300 and 400.

What am I not considering?

What you want to use it for.

No question it is a fast boat. On the other hand it has a lot less space than the condomarans and will suffer more if it is carrying too much stuff.

Also probably need more skill to sail it. Not saying it is over canvassed as much as many cruising cats are under canvassed. At the least it will require more attention if you are sailing fast in serious weather.

A lot of folks buy a boat for what they think they will use a boat for as opposed to what they wind up using the boat for.

I was going to buy a 55.
Could not stand in the main cabin....I am 6'4''.
Otherwise love the boat.

Re: Outremer 50s

Been on the 55L haven't been on the 50S yet but will soon. The 55L was too small inside for me. I am tall. The 50s looks larger from videos and pics. We will see.

Re: Outremer 50s

Also been on a 55L and found the cabin a bit cramped for full-time cruising/liveaboard. Great sailing boat though. We were specifically looking to ensure that it would be manageable for a couple of small but fit seniors. Given the choice, we'd have gone for the standard cabin. We found a different boat, but the 50S was a strong contender.

Cheers,

Re: Outremer 50s

To add a bit more:

All the Outremers we found had galley up. We had a mild preference for galley down and are now glad to have it that way. Some of the O's have saildrive and some shaft. We preferred shaft. The standard cabin is larger than the light cabin. Mast hight will preclude using the AICW, but that's not where these boats shine anyway. Lastly the power of these large catamarans may surprise you. Handle with care.

Cheers,

Re: Outremer 50s

Very nice boats just getting a bit longer in the teeth. Still, some say better than the newest offering from this yards.

I talked to owners of one of these last years. Spades.

Re: Outremer 50s

Does anyone know when outremer quit manufacturing the 50s?

Re: Outremer 50s

Nothing definitive, but 2009/2010 is when they started modernizing the fleet.
