ORMA 60 tris to "do" the Hobart

Sean Langman has announced that his Team Australia ORMA 60 and Simon Hull's Team Vodafone Orma 60 will be undertaking a challenge race starting two hours after the main sydney hobart fleet, he anticipates beating the leading monos by half a day.

He says that he is a long time competitor in the Hobart and a CYCA (the organiser of the Hobart) member and is disappointed that his club won't entertain a multi division. Move aside Wild Oats - fast boats coming through.

Depends on conditions. An Orma can't beat a sleek mono on a tight upwind course.

I thought they fell out of grace - saw some for sale at very 'low' prices recently.

Yeah, Langman's boat is pretty old hat in racing multihull terms, whereas Wild Oats is arguably the fastest racing mono in the world.

And the tri will kick it's arse.

We will see. Much depends on what conditions they are in during the race.

Why do you say Wild Oats is the fastest mono? How fast can she go?

I thought things like IMOCA and VOR were faster.

VOR boats have raced to Hobart. Other international "hotshots" too. Wild Oats beats them.

You are implying winning S-H equals being 'arguably the fastest racing mono in the world'.

No, I'm suggesting that beating every other monohull it's come up against, including VOR boats, (which it beat easily) equals being arguably the fastest.

OK. We have some waiting now ahead. THE record is with a multi too I think (IDEC?) so I too think ban a bad combo of wind force and direction a big tri should beat a big mono.

I am watching that sailing related event in the US (AC) and wonder if foiling multis will be the next step in open water sailing too? I know Hydroptere sailed (or intended to sail) a long Pacific leg.

The future trickles down from the racing track. Such a shame I can't afford a big ocean going tri! Seen Rayon Vert (50) converted to 'cruising' mode. Very, very lovely sailing boat.

The outright (not the race record) Sydney-Hobart record is currently held be Team Australia and Sean Langman - the ORMA tri that is going to "shadow" the race.

Actually I don't think beating Wild Oats will achieve what Langman says he wants to see - multihull class for the race. IMO that would make it LESS likely to happen. (Think Amaryllis)

The sad part about all of this is that Langman is a member of the organising club, and has done a number of Hobarts some very proudly in the self proclaimed slowest boat in the fleet, an 80 year old beautiful old gaffer called Maluka of Kermandie. He also has done it in fast monos e.g. Grundig. It appears that he simply enjoys sailing all sorts of boats - irrespective of age style number of hulls etc. Shame his club isnt as sensible.
