Multiple TWA calculators, multiple answers.

Irrespective, it would make sense that sailing deeper angles, if you can maintain boatspeed, will get you to the leeward mark sooner.

It's also obvious from the on-board footage that there's much more than 1 degree of difference in AWA between upwind and downwind. The way they trim the wing clearly shows that.

Re: Newb Multihull wind angle question

First time I've tried to upload a picture - hope it works. A snapshot of the plotter after tacking our Atlantic 57 31 times up the Great Bras D'Or. As others have said, heading and boat speed and leeway are the inputs to VMG - the trick is to optimize VMG - paying attention to AWA/S, TWA/S etc. are just tools to do this. Hope this helps...

Simple trigonometry tells us that there are two solutions.

But you have to ask the correct question.

From the same Adventures of the Sailboat Questeria utilities you used:

Unfortunately, the L-36.com calculator is poorly programmed and is incapable of calculating the second solution. Put in 7kts at 148° True and 21 knots Boat Speed and it changes the TWS to 28.6 knots and displays nonsensical results.

So that's actually 0:3 if you use the correct parameters and discard the clearly flawed calculator.
