New Leopard 38

This seems to be the new adittion to the Leopard Fleet.

It has 3 cabin version only. looks very nicely designed. A nice alternative for Lagoon 380.

There are some photos in the web-site and the brochure is pending.

I saw one in the water at RCYC in Cape Town. I did not get a chance to have a close look however. Looking from the front looked quite narrow and I think the vertical window on the front spoils the lines looking straight on. Looks very nice from the side. I think they are being built for the Sunsail fleets as a cheaper cat than the 40.

The old 38 was 1 1/2 feet wider. I also liked the beam splitting the tramps on the old model.

Also has an awful roll-back helm seat like a Lagoon 380s. No lumbar support either. First time an owner spends a full week aboard, that uncomfortable seat back will go on the upgrade to-do list. Don't the builders actually use their boats?

Very attractive boat , some clever details , but why are cat builders so shy of showing shots of under the bridgedeck ?? clearance is what many cats suffer a lack of .

There is no navigation table and the backrest on the aft bank you can move forward and backward (I guess), so that you can either eat or turn back and watch the scenery.

Very innovative.

Would appreciate a careful look at the Anchor/windlass locker - comment on its position then some thoughts on anchoring with this system - also ideas on how to attach a nylon bridal with chain to the anchor chain, once the anchor is set ????

I have been told that the base price is 269.000 us$, which is the same price category as Lagoon 380.

Had another look at the Leopard site, especially at the position of what appears to be the anchor roller, relative to the distance from the forebeam.
Added to the 2 photos from the website are pointers to what APPEARS to be a problem.
My own preference would be to have the roller under the forebeam so that the cat pivots on that point.
However, I am told that other Leopard models have a similar system to that shown in the 'New' 38 ?????

That system looks the same as the Leopard 46 which I have chartered a number of times. There is a bridle that vomes back to the point where the chain comes over the roller. You can just see it to the right where the chain comes over the first roller in the picture. You drop the anchor let out the chain you want. You then clip the bridle onto the chain and let it out a bit more. The cat then is secured by the bridle which is permanently attached to the front of each hull. Works very well. When pulling up the anchor you winch in the chain until the bridle appears, remove it from the chain and hook it back onto a u bolt and pull in the rest of the chain. Anchoring a cat on a bridle stops it swinging about so much and acts like a nice shock absorber

Thanks for the heads up, I can't make out the clip. Do I understand that once the anchor is set, one can reach over the roller in the space that the anchor has left, get hold of the clip (chain hook) and attach it to the anchor chain and then let more chain out until the bridal takes over ??

Hi, You do not need to work below the opening where the chain drops down. The bridle hook is on the top right corner of the opening where the chain drops down. (Hard to see in the photo due to the shadow, if you enlarge the photo, you can just make it out.) You clip the hook on the chain before it drops down over the front roller.

Finally understand , Thanks -- one last question -- how easy would it be to change an anchor ?? Would you have to pull up the anchor from one of the bows using the bridal ? or use a dinghy ?

This was posted on multihulls4us web site. Peter has the option sheets available to e mail. If you go for every option you can get the price up to almost 400k. He says both the 3 and 4 cabin version will be in Md.

The Leopard 38' can be ordered as a 3 cabin / 2 head 'owners version or 4 / 2and the Sunsail 3800 will stricly be a 4 cabin / 2 head model. There are additional forepeak berths on either sides.
The galley faces aft, and the salon table can drop down to create another double. The Leopard 38' has wide and flat side decks as well as the open transom and easy cockpit entrance that you see on any Leopard catamaran. The hardtop has integrated solar panels.
The shower is a real stall shower with a door, no bending over the toilet and getting everything wet!
Engine specs above give the standard 19HP but pretty much all Leopard 38's and Sunsail 3800's will be build with 29 HP Yanmar 3GM30F's.

Base price for the Leopard 38' will be $269,000 and the first one will be introduced in the US at the boat show">Annapolis boat show in October, and is available for sale. Call / email me for option sheet & pricing.

I reckon using the dinghy would be easiest, or run a rope from the anchor to the fromt crossbeam and pull it up there. The weight of the chain would make that route a bit more tricky.
