Seems like a respectable speed. Boat undoubtably lighter than a typical cruising weight, but very good performance.

wonder what cat/lagoon bashers are up to. No comment so far from polux & co.

Note this cat flies spi inside shrouds and only 1 spreader. Can use gennaker quite close to wind, i reckon.

In my opinion on expense of some windward ability, which is overrated anyway. I would happily go with new concept.

My Lagoon has never seen 16 knots; well, not since the anchor snagged that submarine!

Just goes to show what a heavy boat is capable of; in expert hands, with big sails and a moderate wind. A gennaker or similiar is a "must have" for a L42 if sailing is desired.

And there were those who said it couldn't be done.......

Been cruising with some cats now for several months and none of them are capable of those speeds. Actually they are sailing mono hull speeds for the most part and slower hard on the wind. That said all these cats are cruise loaded to the hilt so while some of them might do those speeds empty in ideal conditions I don't think I would buy the boat expecting to be cruising at those speeds.

My old TPI Lagoon with keels saw 12 knots , heavily loaded with a standard headsail, so Yes, I would think 16 knots with a spinnaker of sorts up would be very doable.

this speeds are from L 41, see 120 angle and more to get an idea what any cat of that size/weight is capable of with spi.

No surprises here, except maybe for less educated.

Speeds from 70 to 120 angles are achievable & surpassed with gennaker on L 400. And white sails do upwind job quite well.

Designers did great job as fat hulls seem to make boat more stable in these high speeds. Narrow hulled cat may have more jerky motion in this conditions.

i am in coastal cruising trim and no mono is match so far when i deploy gennaker. Note that today's cat has less white sail area and are designed to carry lightwind sails. Older models had 1 sail for all.

I like this concept as it is good for exercise. Older we get more exercise we need.

I'm sure you are correct. For the most part the cats have
not been using flying sails as winds have been in the white sail range. Some have furled light air sails which seems to really help in the lighter airs but maybe the skippers are on the conservative side as even monos were sticking with white sails.

Hate to show my lack of knowledge, re terminology what is 'white sail' and 'flying sails' as distinct to my white sails, meaning colour.

White sails are working sails, mainsail and headsails, flying sails are gennakers and spinakers.
