Negotiating a new catamaran?

I am in the market for a catamaran. How much of a discount can one expect to receive on a new catamaran? Where should we start our negotiations?

We are looking at a Lagoon 42, specifically.

Re: Negotiating a new catamaran?

Are you talking about a brand new catamaran where you choose all the options to add to the base model?

Re: Negotiating a new catamaran?

Since the Caribbean charter and private fleet is still recovering, I doubt you have much room for negotiations.

In the past, if you offer to buy a boat show model in adavance of the show they offer a discount.

Re: Negotiating a new catamaran?

In today's hyper catamaran market it will be difficult to get any price reductions, at least out of the builder. The dealers will typically have some room to provide upgrades or equipment at reduced prices but not a lot of room. If you can tie your purchase to a boat show timing for the dealer then you can expect some discounts on commissioning and berthing and perhaps some reduced or dealer cost on equipment.

Everyone is sold out for two years. You are not going to negotiate much if any discount. Lagoon also just pushed through a significant price increase. Partially due to the market and partially the changing Euro to Dollar exchange rate.

You should look on the secondary market even though it is currently a sellers market. A new boat generally takes 2 years to sort out all the bugs. Save yourself the work and get a nice discount and a as new boat ready to go.

Negotiating a new catamaran?

Discounts will only be provided on new Lagoons by the Lagoon agents and its their choice whether to grant this. We received a 5%discount on our new 450 and I just asked it it was given. But I know other owners received none. Its a sellers market right now for Lagoons so donít hold your hopes high.

Think about asking for other perks that may benefit your ie free berthing for a short period, etc.

Yes, there are some excellent used 450s on the markets at the moment, bugs sorted, upgraded for cruising, etc. still reasonably priced. Email me if your interested.

Re: Negotiating a new catamaran?

It IS a sellers market in new Catamarans. Any discount will be minimal. But the flip side isn't too bad right now either. If you have a used Cat right now that is in good condition it's still a sellers market. I believe if you buy new now that by the time you take delivery that it will be worth more than you will have negotiated to pay for it. I'd also carefully predict that three or four years later if you want to sell you'd probably come pretty close to breaking even or take a small loss that would easily be offset by the time you enjoyed the boat for a few years.

It is fully proven with its entire amazing trip history available, so perfect, or almost as it doesnt have rope-cutter on the SD60.

Tellie, that's a pretty bold prediction. I guess once people sell their boat they also leave cruisersforum, but I'd love to hear from owners that broke even selling a three-to-four year old boat.

Re: Negotiating a new catamaran?

here is an idea!

say to seller, new or secondhand, that this cat does not go to weather and you REQUEST discount else you will walk away . I bet you will get 15% discount on above.

Come back and report.

even better- get lagoon bashers posts from CF and read to seller one by one. they will get real soft in price.

I'm still here 5 years after selling my boat. Still interested in what's going on, just don't own a boat any more.

Yes, it certainly is. I work with a lot of new Cat vendors and this is pretty much the buzz. I wish I had put an order in a year or two ago on any new Leopard 45' and above just for speculation.
