Mono Beats Catamaran

Interesting race, however may not have been a full use of all available sails on the cat,

Upwind race. I look forward to the competition on other points of sail.

Re: Mono Beats Catamaran

"mono beats catamaran" is the title and obviously this is such an extremely rare occurrence that someone thinks it worthy of a thread.

I mean, if someone posted a new thread every time 'catamaran beats mono' happened, we'd be up in the millions of threads about it by now, wouldn't we?

I'm with the other cranky old fart on this one.....Who Cares?

I can't think of any additional sails the cat would have flown as the course was tight on the wind. Cracking of the wind a little and it may have been a different story. Delos was sailing at hull speed and cracking of the wind would have just increased the speed of the cat. We sailed next to a Super Maramu in the Chesapeake on a beam reach in about 6-10 knots of wind when we were on our Seawind 1000 and we were substantially faster.

Re: Mono Beats Catamaran

But who wins? The one who sailed in first or the one who had most fun?

If I were to judge from the relaxed manner of the cat driver vs. the agitated attitude of the mono guy, the cat won!

;-)

Re: Mono Beats Catamaran

And when you both get back to the anchorage where you are going to spend the next week, would you rather be sitting in a nice spacious, level, stable catamaran bridgedeck cockpit every day looking across at a view of a beautiful monohull, or stuffed in a cramped cockpit in a narrow, rolly monohull looking across at the view of an ugly catamaran?

Re: Mono Beats Catamaran

in the wind<8kt range, a screacher would have been the sail to carry;
the jib luff is sagging, it appears;
I guess the Barramundi doesn't have daggerboards, which would have carried her to 40 degrees apparent, instead of the 60;

and the Barramundi is certainly NOT ugly

Re: Mono Beats Catamaran

For me this looks like SV Delos wants to help the cata guy getting more traffic to his cata site. Solidarity between live aboards. The race is only the excuse for a video.

The screecher is a great light wind sail and can probably be used for a close reach if cut pretty flat, but maybe not great for what they were doing which was tacking upwind?

Re: Mono Beats Catamaran

We ave raced our PDQ 36 and 27 in mixed monohull fleets for years and what we found that when the wind was lighter that monohulls, once they started going could indeed be faster upwind .
light wind and flat water often go together
I think the the monos get to hull speed and their weight keeps them there in these conditions. This is really evident while tacking. I also believe that it might be a wetted surface issue.
When Dennis Conner defended against the big Kiwi boat on the San Diego AC . the analysts suggested that the only condition where the the 100 ft plus mono could beat the cat was in sub 5 knot winds.
This changes quite quickly with a small increase in wind
trimarans also do much better in light winds than cats
