Daggerboards (and to a lesser degree centerboards and lee boards) are the most effective leeway preventive and windward enhancing devices yet developed

Which is why you won't find a modern state of the art race boat (Monohull or multihull) without a foiled blade

They work on EXACTLY the same principles of "Fluid Dynamic Lift" as sails and airplane wings - (in Physics air is considered a "fluid")

PULLING the boat (in this case) forward AND to windward

As for cruising suitability - that's a question that the individual boat owner/cruiser must answer for himself

But there's no question that a foiled blade will outperform a minikeel on ALL points of sail

And gives a greater shoal draft capability
