Marine Beanbags on Tramp

Is anybody using one of these marine bean bags on your tramp for additional seating? I've seen them at West Marine but I like the ones from Ocean -Tamer as they seem to be a better quality product. Their intended purpose was to smooth out the ride on fishing boats as they hauled butt out to sea. It seems like a cool idea to put them out on the tramp for comfortable seating but I'm worried they would be a PITA to store. The wife really likes the idea but I'm not sold on it yet. It may be more trouble than it's worth. I sat on and tried out the teardrop shaped one at a boat show and I have to admit it was very comfortable with great back and neck support

If you have somewhere on top you can lash them down, they are great, on my fishing boat I put them on the T-top, if you don't have a place out of the way to put them, they are huge and will be in the way, mine are waterproof, so they do not have to be inside.

That could be a good idea. I don't know that I would use them on a trampoline, but in a rough sea state in the cockpit it would provide a safe comfortable place to sit.

I was just planning to use them on the tramp at an Anchorage just to relax with a cocktail etc. No plans of using it in a rough sea state.
A64pilot - good point on lashing them. I suppose if they're waterproof I could lash them to the tramp while underway

I suspect the size and type of boat you have would be a consideration in how useful such chairs would be. When I bought my Seawind there were two of these go anywhere chairs on the boat. I use them when driving the boat. I also have a big deck box in the cockpit that I can move them on so I am able to sit in the shade and steer with my foot on the wheel or use the paddle for the AP. Also like to sit on them and read in the shade of the cockpit. So for me storage is never a problem.

While you did not post it I am guessing you have some type of trimaran. If it is something like a F24 I can see how storage might be a problem. On the other hand a C37 might have plenty of room to store them. Answering your question would be easier if you posted the type of boat you have.

I wonder if a net hammock could be wrapped around one then used to lash the bag in place. They are light enough that it won't effect stability to just leave them in place, and this way you wouldn't have to find storage for them offshore.

We have a couple of cheap beanbags which we primarily use on the tramp at anchor, sometimes on a daysail. They store in the anchor lockers.

I've got a water resistant teadrop type bean bag for my monohull. Best seat in the boat. Chuck it in the corner of the cockpit and wedge yourself in. Well worth its bulk.

Most marines I know are not gonna be happy being called beanbags and tramp is not pc, prostitute's not gonna be happy either!!

I do a lot of overnight offshore fishing, and we use beanbags every trip.

I can usually only sleep well stretched out on a hard mattress, and believe it or not, myself and everyone I know have no problems at all sleeping for hours in a beanbag in rough seas. Very easy to move however you want, and still get perfect support.

I should add - if you have anyone under 16 on board, you probably won't be able to ever get them out of one-

We did a bareboat cat charter in St. Martin recently and the boat came equipped with two of these. They were tied to the forward nets and they did move around in the 35k gusts and 9 foot seas, but we didn't lose either of them.


I'd say they could get in the way but they were also very comfortable. My co-captain fell asleep in one. Might be nice to have if you're coastal and/or have a place to stow it.

I did a charter in Thailand a couple years back on a 50 ft cat. It had 4 bean bags with lanyards. The beds were horrible and those bean bags were the only thing I could sleep on. They were used all the time during the day on the nets. In the off chance they were not in use they were tied to the base of the mast. And were out of the way.

I will definitely have them on my boat.
