Manufacturers

Hello All, new to the sport and wondering who the manufacturers of 50 foot catamarans. I aim to get a boat that just the two of us can handle. Trying to build the perfect boat in my head and on paper and would like to see what is out there. I see all the sites that have boats for sale but I want one set up for me not for charters and what-not. Thanks.

Not to be disrespectful ... I don't believe we have enough information to make a qualified recommendation.

How much sailing experience do you have? In what sized boats?

Have you sailed cruising catamarans?

Can you handle the sails on a 50 foot catamaran at sea, in a storm at night.... alone?

I've been sailing these type of boats for a while and become uncomfortable at anything over about 44'. Granted, I'm probably a lot older than you but we have to remember, when things go bad at sea, they go bad all at once.

As of right now i cant handle anything. I plan to take lessons. I live close to the great lakes i know it is not the ocean but it is a start. I think i want a cat. Just trying to see what is out there. My end up with a 5 foot cat for all i know. I have just recently fell in love for the second time in my short sailing life. A Baroness 566. It is unreasonable at this point but dream big right?

I misunderstood, it appears you want a boat where two of you handle the crew!

It would just be the two of us. Maybe some friends at times. The baroness i mentioned is a 55 ft beauty. It is likely both more than i need and more than ill ever be able to afford. I just really like the layout.

When you are looking at a boat and the manufacturer includes crew berths, there is a reason. Can 2 people operate this boat, sure, for any one particular passage. I would bet a good sum that the same 2 people would not maintain and operate this boat for an extended period of time. It's simply too much work. If you can afford this boat, you can afford crew to operate it for you.

Re: Manufacturers

I respectfully disagree. My 2 friends, a couple, are sailing a 60' cat and they've logged over 1000 miles with just the two of them. They've stopped to have a baby so their miles have stopped as well.
Their blog is searavensailing.com if you want some pictures and stories.
An autopilot is as good as two crew, especially if you have roller furling and lazyjacks.

At 1.8 million usd, let me know when you wake up from that dream.
That is not a double handed boat even if you were dreaming.

Re: Manufacturers

The Outremer is the only one worth owning. That or a Chris White design.

Re: Manufacturers

Both Outremers and Chris White cats are excellent but if our new mate "wanttosail" does not have that much cash lying around and wants to dream a little less big, he could check out:

Catamarans - Kelsall Catamarans - Sail Design Range Over 46 Foot
