main sail 85 m2 what block to use ?

a frend has a cat with main sail on 85 m2 he needs to get a new block he is using 14mm rope how strong does the block need to be ?
it on a 45 for Simpson.
the old bloc has no name or any info on it ?

What's the block being used for? A sheet, turning block, traveler, halyard lead? They all need different strength parts.

Pulling up the main, main sail hoist, dobbel line.

I use Harken 75mm Big Boat blocks for the 2:1 main halyard, for the main sheet (boom) and as turning blocks for the screecher/ASI. These take the highest loads on the boat. The rest are 75mm ESPs ($550 vs $190).

For the top of the mast a sheave on a pin.

For the mast base turning block probably a Karver KB10 (SWL of 1 tons) but I might go up to the KB12 (SWL 1.4 tons) depending on lead angle and expected load. For a 2:1 halyard block a KB14 (SWL 2 tons).

I prefer the Karvers since they fail safe, and are typically lighter and cheaper. At least for this type of gear than Harken is.

2wind are you flying an asymmetrical? Just had one made getting ready to order blocks will be using 2 harken 57 black magic at mid ships and harken 57 esp for the tack bridle on the bow peaks pad eyes

We use 75mm Harken on our blocks to.

My favorite is Antal, 2000 SWL for a lagoon 45, turning block with a lock in position , be ware of some blocks made from metal as the wear on the main halyhard or mast is horrendous.

I think you will be under done using 57s. I suggest 75 all round. The price differential is minimal. You need a block rated above 2T.

Have you considered one of the Wichard 2:1 halyard shackles. Dyneema may slide better.

Jim, I've used the MX 10 (suitable for up to 14 mm rope) om my previous cat.

It replaced a 50 mm diameter custom block. Hoist height of 14 meters.
The mx 10 is way oversize , as I was only using a 10 mm spectra halyard.
I figured that the larger shackle with the smaller rope would induce less friction.

It worked fine and i'm happy with my choice. Its worth keeping in mind that if your main has a headboard with pressed insert you may be battling for space between the top of the headboard and the halyard, as the whole shackle rocks back slightly through friction as you hoist. A webbed on ring for the headboard leaves plenty of room. Also the physical height of the shackle is less than the block it replaced, giving me a slightly higher hoist height.

The wichard shackle is so simple its pretty hard to stuff up. I would go this route again.

We have had one on our Catana 48 with a 90m2 mainsail for the last couple of years. Works great.
