The only point I can add is
when sailing up sir Francais drakes channel in 18 knts on the noise in a shortish 4-6ft sea in our chartered bagged out sail 380.
A Mahe had no hope of keeping up, the hobby horseing was disturbing to look at and all on board noted they were please we were on the 380.
All I can conclude...... Weight is not always a bad thing ! If speed means that much by a Gunboat

Another question: Do the 380s make a tremendous amount of creaking and groaning when in rough conditions? I think it was boatman61 who posted that he would rather be in a Lagoon cockpit during a storm because it was quieter than being inside. Thanks!

The numbers tell the whole story.

Mahe 36 and Lagoon 380 have almost the same length at the water line (Lwl).

Mahe 36 has the upper hand in Sailing Speed and speed of motoring, because of the narrower hulls.

You will never feel a lagoon 380 accelerate like a Mahe 36

Do you know how bad the hobby horsing of the 380 looked from a distance?

I agree that our Mahe is hobby horsing more than our previous Lagoon 410, but that is a completely different boat size.

However I tend to disagree on the implication that the Mahe is unable to keep up with a 380. All things being equal I am quite sure the Mahe is faster than the 380.
Top speed recorded is 12,4kn after sailing about 500nm this summer. Top speed of our 410 was 11,3kn in about 7000nm. Doing 9kn is nothing special on the Mahe but really exceptional on the 410.


I would be happy with both a 380 or a Mahe. I'd prefer the 380 for living aboard but the Mahe for sailing ability.

Mmmm.... what is tremendous?
All cats I have been on squeak and creak to a certain degree. This sound is far more annoying than the sound of wind and wave outside. So if the weather is OK I'd be outside, too.

Our 410 had a few spots that were squeaking like hell. The most badly squeaking areas I could fix, it was just wood rubbing against fibreglass.
Our Mahe has two points that are squeaking badly, too. Not sure yet what to do about it, as I can't get at the exact locations.

But that is to me nothing to worry about.

sailing or surfing?

There is no <40ft cruising cat that can really sail at that speed. Except maybe some Evil Knievel guy with a huge Spinnaker in a gale

Nop I don't know what the 380 looked like, but it was obvious the Mahe was getting the wind knocked out of its sails! I am sure in a flatter sea condition the lighter Mahe would over take a 380 .

All I can say is that in the conditions we were in, the 380. Was handling the conditions better, but you are more than welcome to disagree with my opinion

As for creaking, yep she did a bit, but we didn't sleep under way, so it didn't bother us. The majority came from the floor/ deck boards.

I haven't had the opportunity for comparing with a 380 in any kind of weather this year. We stayed in the Ionian / Greece so no waves and no wind to speak of.

And during passage from Italy to Greece there were no other boats out there. Maybe because of the gale warning

So if a Mahe 36 is faster than a Lagoon 380, there is no way that a Lagoon 380 can be faster than a Salina 48 in 3 races in a row?
