Every now and then I realize that I am dumber than I thought previously. I am beginning to fear that there is no bottom to this hole.

I am looking for a new (to me) boat. I was looking at the FP Tobago, and then some others and the LWL makes no sense. I always thought it was the actual length of the hull touching the water. The Tobago, for instance, is listed at around 32.25 feet. The LOA is 35 feet. Looking at many of them in pictures there is no way the waterline is more that a foot less the LOA. What nautical mania have I missed?

Depends on the load. Most cruising boats will sit a lot deeper than the design waterline shown. Get a bit of weight in the stern and the LWL increase considerably.
