Looking to buy a Cat

Hello Sailor(s),
I am looking to buy an Easy 37 Cat.
I have read the responses to an earlier thread regarding an Easy 37, and it seems to be a great boat suited to my intended use (Cruising/Liveaboard).
The particular Cat I am looking at is moored in Sydney (Australia) and is named "Pineapple Bay". I believe it was professionally built in Queensland, although the present owner purchased her in Victoria. It is advertised on gumtree and perhaps elsewhere.

I have seen an "out of water" survey (for insurance purposes). Can anyone tell me if such a survey looks at such things as through hull fittings and any penetration of water etc?

The survey seems to show the boat in good condition.
Thank you to all respondents.
Butso

Re: Looking to buy a Cat

I have no info on that boat or model.
But surveys are done for a reason. How long ago was the survey? Who did it and their reputation? Who paid for it and for what reason was it done?
If you didn't pay for it you can trust it even less than if you did.
Boats can go down hill fast.
Usually the surveyor will look for water damage and usually visually inspect the through hulls.

Re: Looking to buy a Cat

When I do insurance surveys they are less invasive than a pre-purchase survey. A pre-purchase survey really gets into all the structure of the boat and the condition of everything onboard. An insurance survey is usually not so detailed and more about the main items that will make a boat sink.
Remember a survey you have not paid for is worth nothing. You need to employ your own independant surveyor who has your interests at heart.
Cheers

Re: Looking to buy a Cat

Thank you both for your insightful comments.
The survey I have seen was done in January and paid for by the present owner.
It seems prudent that I have another survey done as a pre-purchase should I proceed.
Thank you again.
Butso.

Re: Looking to buy a Cat

If you can, spend some time on the boat yourself, looking into all the nooks and crannies. Tapping on plywood with a coin is a good way to look for soft spots. There's a completely different sound from a soft bit. Try to tap around the skin fittings and where any deck hardware is screwed on. Also around hatches and windows.

A surveyor will probably check with a moisture meter, but the time they can spend is limited.

Re: Looking to buy a Cat

Phone up the surveyor and have a chat, see how many cats he has done, is he a professional etc etc. On our previous boat we had it surveyed prior to listing to ensure anything major could be repaired, so the buyer did not have any "survey leverage".

Re: Looking to buy a Cat

Thanks again for the replies.
I've since been informed the Easy Cat I am looking at was originally named "Two Shaye".
That was the spelling given to me, but perhaps it may have been "Two Che".
Does anyone know of this Cat?

Re: Looking to buy a Cat

Funny enough we've been anchored near a boat callled Two Shay, until today. That's a Lightwave 38 though.

Amazed I'm able to post this from Black reef!
