Lightwave 38 -payload/displacement question

Hi
We have been looking at a Lightwave 38 for our first boat. We plan to live onboard and circumnavigate. The displacement is 5000kg with a max of 6500kg. This 1500kgs seems very little for the amount of gear we will have to carry for long passages and general comfort of living on board for the next 5-10 years

Can anyone advise me? Am i missing something?

Thanks

Remember that 1500 kg is not just for skipper, crew and associated personal gear also need to add in fuel, water, extra batteries, solar panels, water maker and all the additional control equipment.

Thanks. Allegedly the 5000kgs included the water and fuel...

Re: Lightwave 38 -payload/displacement question

i dont know about lighwave 38, but as my countdown started, I also started adding up kilos we will have to carry and come up to 2000kg on top of fuel & water.

Waterline rise estimated 7cm or so, which appears still in design range.

Nope, the Lightwave displacement includes half tanks, and already has batteries and solar panels fitted, even has a mast and sails.

Excuse my ignorance, but does that mean the 5000kg includes those items i.e half full fuel and water?

Yep, but why dont you talk to Roger at Lightwave Yachts at Coomera, he will give you the correct information on the boats. He is a good man.

Be careful here Heg. You may find the figures are pretty rubbery. Sadly the manufacturers can't be relied on for the truth.

I have raced against a few Lightwave 38s' in the past and I'm guessing there a lot heavier than the 5000kg figure you mention.

One of the few places to source a reliable figure is from a Rating certificate where the vessel type in question has actually been lifted and weighed.

The OMR rating certificates are published on line. Sadly no data for a Lightwave.

As examples of published V actual there is the weight of a corsair 50 (weighed at over 13 tons with empty tanks etc. Manufacturer states around 9 tons from memory).

Then the classic Seawind 1160, (weighed a considerable amount more than the manufacturer declared around 6). The actual rating has been removed but was discussed here in another thread. It may have been as high as 8 or 9 tons from memory, anyone?

Google OMR ratings and check the figures. I would love to be proved wrong. Wouldn't it be great to be able to believe a salesman.

I'd be surprised if your Lightwave weighed less than 7 tons empty. Would loved to be surprised though.

Re: Lightwave 38 -payload/displacement question

We recently hauled our 1160 , travel lift was at 8.12 ton with full kit onboard , and 1/2 full water tanks and fuel ,

Re: Lightwave 38 -payload/displacement question

Thanks Andrew. Another data point.

Seawind 1160 LITE claim 6.5 tons displacement.

http://www.seawindcats.com/models/se...te/#specs-view

Your seeing over 8 now , so with full food, water, fuel and 400 kg of human flesh i would think your max load displacement would be getting close to 9.5 tons? .

I'm feeling more confident in my prediction for the Lightwave.

Just note that travel lifts are rough guides at best, the actual weights could be half a tonne or more either way.

Re: Lightwave 38 -payload/displacement question

So if the Lightwave is a heavier boat than the Manufacturer's spec, does that mean in theory ,that she will be able to take a greater payload, or that we will have even less weight allowance for personal items?

Re: Lightwave 38 -payload/displacement question

Like I said - talk to Roger at Lightwave, he will explain it all honestly. I would tend to speak to the experts rather than the wannbees.

Lots of lightwaves around.

Try chatting to their owners.

Theres possibly some owners on this forum.

They seem like a popular boat. There faster around a course than a Seawind.

The only one that I know of that has capsized was up near Fraser island.
