LF advice: shortest path to getting on the water ...

Hello everyone,

I had the good fortune to sail a Lagoon 380 last summer on the Chesapeake. Had one day of instruction then was able to bareboat with my friends for a second day (not windy). It was everything I had imagined. We want more, we want more ...

So aside from frantically working on means to afford renting and perhaps owning a larger catamaran one day, I've been trying very hard to figure out my "way in" so-to-speak. Some questions, if I may. I live in Manassas, VA. Annapolis has been my logical nearest port. Someone please correct me if there's someplace else nearby DC / NoVA that's better.

I. License

Near me seems to be mainly ASA. There is one NauticEd shop, but I'm not clear on how well that's honored globally.

II. Costs and time getting the license

Nautic Ed requires 4 days on the boat. ASA classes seem similar but the # of days required on a boat seems to vary by school. Generally, ASA classes seem to cost more.

My ideal would be a place and method where I could get certified via a number of day sails. Not sure if either exists.

III. Schools

Can anyone recommend one near DC / Annapolis?

Thanks,

Dave Topper
