I have to agree with that, it certainly is a milestone in how far off the track multihull design has gone, 13 tonne for 43 foot!!

No, we were blessed to be day hopping along in Hawks Channel from Biscaine Bay to KW so perfect for a screaming reach with relatively flat water. We saw 12.4, and regiilarly 11.6 but average was really 9-10: two 50mile days with 0900 start and anchored by cocktail hr. I was intimidated by her speed, to be honest, because we had five kids aboard, and they loved to scramble. Standard jib and main.
Your peaks are a function of the way the plotter works in that it picks up instantaneous readings surfing down a wave. You may get various peak times when it hits 10kn for short periods. Leaving at 9am and arriving at 4pm for 50km is an average of 7kn, which over many thousands of miles I find the Helia averages (typically 170 nm per day).

In regard to the OP you cannot split Helia and Leopard for sailing ability. It is simply a matter of preferred layout.

I have read pros and cons on both but still not sure which would be better for sailing the Caribbean.
The concerns on the leopard are mostly on the weight to power ratio and water accumulation in the forward cockpit area. Although the drain time is stated as being 45 sec, multiple waves could allow for enough water to gather greatly affecting the weight balance. I do love the forward cockpit feature.
I am hoping some of you have some input on this topic.

Thanks for your help

Ps, new leopard is out towards end of the year. You could get a pretty good price on a new 44 now - current model that is. Tbh the new leopard 40 feels bigger than the current 44

Maybe their cocktail hour starts at 1:30 or 2:00🤔

Re: Leopard 44 vs Fontain Helia 44

Don't know if the OP is still interested but here's a copy of my post from another thread. We just bought a leopard 44 and we couldn't be happier. For us there was no comparison in the build quality between the Helia and the Leopard.
We also looked at the new lagoon 42. It was a nice boat but we could not get over the galley and salon layout and functionality. Plus if you have to have 57 hp diesel's on a 42 foot boat it probably means you're going to be motoring more than sailing
Anyhow the link to the post is below

Re: Leopard 44 vs Fontain Helia 44

I've sailed both Helia extensively and I cannot see how she can make 12 kts in flat water unless you have a 2-3 kts of current behind. She sails up to max 9, 9,5 kts in flat water close hauled in strong winds (>20 kts true). I did occasionally 10 + in very strong winds (25-30 kts of true) sailing downwind with jib and main. Under spineaker (150 sqm) and 25 kts of true, we did sustained 10-10,5 kts at around 120-130 AWA. In light winds (10-11 kts of true) the max you can make is 5-7 kts , if the water is flat.
We had a Leopard 44 for refit and and sailed her couple of times not more. She was faster than I thought but seemed to be slightly slower than Helia.
The rest, galley, furniture, front door, etc is a matter of taste. I personally like better the Helia.

Cheers
