Lagoon 440

My family and I are wanting to purchase a lagoon 440 and was wondering if anyone can tell us if it is possible for our budget of 300000aud? And also the lagoon 440s that are for sale for 400000-450000 do they actually sell for that?

You might get an ex-charter L440 for around that price. You'll probably have to buy in the Caribbean or U.S. though. If you can't, yet, it'll only be another year or two and then you definitely will.

And then you'll spend another $50K to $100K fitting it out.

I would think he would have to do that anyway... so, wouldn't it be better to wait and get it at the cheaper price a year or 2 from now?

Yup, or buy a different boat. There are 44' cats in that price range or lower that will be closer to $300k as is or refitted when all in.

Remember to add 20-30% if you intend to buy overseas and bring it home (I presume Australia) . Its 5 % duty plus 10% GST (payable on the duty as well - probable changes to electrical systems, gas systems and refrigerant. Not saying it isn't doable - just that you need to factor all the costs in.

Yes we live in Australia and would like to purchase a boat here or Asia.From my understanding buying a cheaper boat overseas (US or Caribbean will be the same price maybe more by the time you refit it and get it and get it back here.I have seen a lagoon 440 for sale for 400000aud that has just undergone full refit what would be a rock bottom starting offer without being offensive ?

With respect you are not going to get the answers you seek on a cruising forum.

Even if you offered 300K there is still the matter of the $45K of import duties and taxes, and refitted is a word covering a wide range of options. Ten yo boat with a lot of work based in Asia - still a bit of work to do. I would not think you would get that boat into Oz and cruise ready for less than $450K.

You might be better to look at a 410. You could get a good one well fitted out and in OZ for $300000.

You might get one for $400,000 but it may be well used and be needing lots of $$$.
They are an awesome boat.

Now that the Aussie dollar has dropped,these cats will hold the price more because the replacements will increase a lot.

I had NO idea that they auction off boats. I know.. stupid, right?! I don't know why I didn't think of it. But this is a great boat, and a great minimum price. even if you have to put $100,000 into it.. it is still an amazing deal. Now, I'm not going to buy a boat in Barcelona.. But I'm guessing that there are USboats for auction as well.. right?

US auctions do exist. There was the recent Contour 50 tri in San Diego. And a Privilege auctioned by Customs. I had a friend of a friend that did a parental kidnapping and got caught in the Bahamas. That was a Catalac 41 and I'm pretty sure it was seized and auctioned off too. A brand new L450 ran into a reef in the Bahamas and it was auctioned off. The salvage crew ripped the bottom out getting it off. Needing TLC would be an understatement! Long threads on CF on that.


That L440 is not an absolute auction. The seller needs to approve the price. The others I mentioned are.

Great boat we love ours...in 2013 i paid $376,000usd for my 2005 lagoon 440 owners model. i spent a total of $85,000 refit before taking her home which apx $40,000 was for installing 240vac a/c and electrical. Also new main plus jib $15,000ish and have probably spent another $20,000 or so at home port and not done yet. Has only seen a few charters in her early days and none last 5-7yrs but still needs lots of TLC and in this size catamaran it can cost.

Hi Aqua... I hope you don't mind me threadjacking for a second, but I had a couple of questions regarding your refit.

At the risk of sounding like an idiot.. what is "240vac"?

Regarding a/c... did you air condition the whole boat? or just the master hull?

What kind of electrical work did you have to do? I see a lot of folks talk about having to refit electrical. Just wondering why so many people have to do that...what should I be looking for when shopping as we want to minimize those refit costs.

You also said she needs a lot of TLC? that scares me a bit. the reason why is that I think that's a pretty average price for that boat, it's not like you got it for a rock bottom basement price. It's about what I would expect to pay for a decent 440 in that age range. yet you say it needs a lot of TLC? can you tell me a bit about that? was it damaged? or not well taken care of?

again, sorry for the threadjack.. just saw an opportunity to learn something.
