Re: Lagoon 42

Saw the 42 yesterday. .. it is huge for a 42. I think it has more square footage than the Helia. Regarding the poster who said he'd spring more for the 450? Not sure why... the 42 feels just as big... with as many if not more amenities. The sport top has great visibility. (I'm only 5' and could see all 4 corners. .. easily. Outdoor spaces are amazing. .. really lovely boat.

That is good to hear Scarlet! Looking at the stats, it sizes up nicely with the Helia and 450...plus seems like it would be a tad easier for a couple to handle than the 450. For me, the reason to get a 450 is for the fly bridge...which I really like, but hard to justify the extra dollars. Can't wait to get the feel for it myself!

I'm going to be checking it out this weekend as those three Lagoon boats you mentioned are on my super short list. I am having a hard time understanding the couple hundred thousand dollar difference between similarly equipped new 42 v. 450, for nearly the same boat...but the 420 has the updated designed cockpit and hulls. I am curious to hear how she actually sails in comparison to the others.
I was under the impression that the pricing between 420 and 450 is not that great? If so, then I would like the 450, if I am wrong then the 420 could be very attractive.

I don't know how the 420 sails. It has the mast fairly far back. There is a compression post in the middle of the cabin because of this.

The cockpit is fantastic. Cabin is very nice as well, just what you would expect from Lagoon.

The new 42, not to be confused with the old models 420 or 421, should be easier to sail than a Lagoon 400 or 450 as it has a "self tacking" jib as opposed to a larger genoa. The fly bridge of the 450F model makes sail handling a little more difficult.

On paper, it seems that the L450 is a far superior boat and perhaps worth the extra money. The L42 has a light displacement of 12 t being hauled by only 94 m2 of sail, where the L450 has a light displacement of 15.1 t with 130 m2 sail area. Both figures are for square top main. Like all Lagoons, both boats would cry out for a gennaker or other light wind sail.

I'm not sure about the specifications of the L42, but the L450 has enormous load carrying capacity. It's over 5 t payload means that it truely is able to carry 12 persons (CE cat A) and all their associated gear across oceans. If you don't wish to have that many people on board, there's space and capacity for lots of alternative cargo.

I don't know yr wishlist but I had an offer today in Istanbul boat show for 340.000 Euros VAT excluded ex La Rochelle. (we have special discounts for the boats to be put in charter, don't blame yr dealer .. )
No A/C and Genset or water maker, washing machine etc. but includes all basics and safety gears.

There is no boat available before 2017 anyway..

Re: Lagoon 42

I also saw the new FP 40, which I looked at with great interest as I was a week away from buying the Mahe 36 when they suddenly announced that not only were they not making the mahe anymore, but not even taking last time orders. I was very upset with this.

My dealer told me all about the new 40. So I spend lots of time looking at it, but I am not that impressed with it. It has a very nice cockpit. I didn't like the separate WC exclusive of the shower/sink in the head on the owners side. I don't know how it sails. Thought the 42 was so much nicer, though a bit more expensive.

While the L400 is a bit dated, the general consensus is the L400 is one of the best sailing boats Lagoon has made. Unfortunately the L39 is one of the worst sailing boats they have, supposedly there is plan in place to reduce weight on the L39 to improve this. Just a rumor however.

Re: Lagoon 42

My wife & I just saw the 42 at the Miami Show yesterday. I believe the loaded show price we were quoted was around $556k (with "crewed" delivery from Europe). We liked the 39, but it was amazing to see the difference between the 39 & 42. Only 3 feet in length difference, but lots more volume, options, & style in the new 42. I believe the 42 was $55k more than the 39 & $100k less than the 45. So the 42 definitely had more "bang for your buck". Interestingly enough, the charges for "shipped" delivery vs. "crewed" delivery was $86k & $29k, respectively. If you had a couple of friends to bring the boat back to the States, you could shave off a little on that price tag. All in all, a gorgeous boat & well thought out plan.

Is this a joke ?

For yr reference this ratio is 10,6 for L 380 and and exactly the same for FP Helia.

I think you should not go for any SA/D ratio below 25 if you aim to sail nicely ;-)

Re: Lagoon 42

It is assumed that on the L39 that under 10kts you will either motor or use a gennaker/code 0 etc if you need to move the boat. Hence the plan to see about reducing weight. If the 42 has the same SA/D ratio as the 39, it would be the same strategy.

HOWEVER, if you look at the Charter guys in the carib who purchase lots of these boats and the average wind is 15 to 25, then the SA/D is just fine. So the 42 with a great interior would be terrific in the isles. YMMV.

I guess you'd learn pretty fast to splash down the steps before boarding after a swim.

Interesting and informative comments on the new L42S, I am keen to read any future sailing reviews particularly from new owners.

Re: Lagoon 42

We were at Maimi Boat show and explored the Lagoon 42 as well as all cats in the 40-48 range. The Lagoon definitely had the most interest as every time we went by there was a crowd on board and a line of people waiting... New design creating lots of interest . I was very impressed with the Lagoon from the cockpit to helm station with great views of all 4 corners, to nice deck area. The Salon was as expected.Impressed with the cabin size/layout. Would love to see how it handles, but guess that will have to wait. Hopefully will have some reports as I understand as show breaks u there will be sea trials on Tuesday and Wednesday..

Simple Answer...dramatically. The layout is so much cleaner and open it is not really close. Not knocking the 400S2 at all, but it is like the designers actually spent time on the boats and thought through all the details, not just from a function standpoint, but esthetically as well. The cockpit being all one height makes the useable space larger than the 450. The execution of the teak deck is gorgeous. The interior is yes Ikea-ish, but very clean and attractive. My business was automotive interiors so I have an extremely critical eye for this stuff, and for the price point that the L42 is at, there honestly was not any comparison at the show. Like others have mentioned here, it was the boat everybody kept coming back to. If she sails as good as she looks Lagoon will have a run-away hit on their hands IMO. (couple pix attached)
