Sailor dies, two crewmen rescued 200 miles at sea

Rescue: Photo Glenn Tucker This is the US Coast Guard helicopter crew that rescued two sailors from a capsized catamaran some 200 miles off Bermuda Pictured are Lt CommanderAdam Kerr, Lt. Andy Schanno, Tom Romero, and Michael Ackermann. By Tim Smith

A sailor died and two others are in hospital after being forced to cling to their capsized boat for up to nine hours as 30-feet waves battered them in a ferocious storm.

Are you sure this was a Lagoon 380? All French cats over 35 ft have to have escape hatches that can be accessed from both sides in the event of a capsize. Surely they'd have been able to get back inside the hull to shelter?

It was a Lagoon 440. The family reports the tragedy here:

I'd highly doubt that you can UNLOCK the hatch from OUTSIDE.

This is true...BUT on my cat and I expect all new cats there is a large RED warning sticker at the excape hatch that says WARNING keep hatch unlocked wile sailing

And in fact I never lock mie wile underway, I have wondered why these folks did not open them up & go inside?

You can on a Privilege... There is a locking bar that will - or at least should - drop off if the boat is ever inverted leaving you then with a standard lewmar hatch that can be opened from the outside.

I fly out on Saturday for an offshore passage to St Lucia and you can be certain I'll be checking that the locking bar is still free to move.

You should be able to and this is a CE requirement that all French builders adhere to. My Belize 43 have escape hatches in the heads and a custom fitted aluminium bar connects over the opening handles. This is held down by gravity and if the boat should go belly up this will fall down and the outside handles can be used.

This system allows for locking mechanism to prevent intrusion under normal sircumstances but allows entry if flipped without doing any prior actions to allo for re-entry.

Happy lead free sailin

Not the same boat, however the same principle, cat's are just as stable inverted as they are right side up.

Yes. and mono's acheive maximum stability right side up. Sitting on the bottom. Pro's and cons for both. I prefer to be afloat. You can make your own choice.
