Jumping Ship - From a Mono to a Cat
Hey. How to say this without starting a war.
Having developed a healthy interest in catamarans since becoming a mod, I am starting to waver. It seems that cats are safer, more spacious and faster, so I was starting to berate myself for wasting all that dosh on a monohull.
But then... we now may have an opportunity to purchase a Catana 47. Not sure of it's age - but I do know it's ONLY a hull, mast and boom - we would need to rebuild everything. That's fine, we also rebuilt our first boat (Elliminator32) from scratch, and ripped our second boat (Kalik 40) back to the bare bones too... so we're used to that.
There are problems though: - There's noone in Kuwait who'd want to buy our boat.
Well, I can't think of any more problems than that... but I'm sure there must be some...

Go for it. Doing your own interior makes a boat special for you, and so many options to suit EXACTLY what you want to do with your boat.

Saucy, wouldn't this effect the date when you want to leave and go cruising??? If not go for it. But you may be stuck with two boats if you can't sell the kalik.

No. In fact, we wouldn't wish to sell the Kalik until the cat's ready to go. But we'd need to sell one of them to be able to afford to sail off around!! And you may have a good point there with the Indian market...
The point is, the more I read about cats, the more I wish I had one. I'm afraid the monohull proponents just don't seem to have the same highly honed debating skills as the cat owners!

Re: Jumping Ship: From a Mono to a Cat
why do you say cats are safer i Grew up on cats from an early age but after doing my first melbourne to hobart yacht race on a 40ft in 1978 i changed my view and in recent yrs have sailed on cats but i still find the mono more pleasurable when out sailing

Re: Jumping Ship: From a Mono to a Cat
The fair lady has expressly said she doesn't want to start another divisive thread. It is very much a matter of what you're used to, particularly in a seaway where the ride is often very different. Certainly you have to hang on more in cat as it moves much faster (stiffer suspension) but not through such a wide range of angles. The big bonus of a Cat is in it's one level accommodation, a bit like living upstairs rather than in a cellar. Not that there aren't some great cruising mono's with superb stern cabins with panoramic windows.

Safer. Hm. Less sinkable, I think is what I mean. You hear of a few cats flipping when overpowered and caught out by gusts; but you hear of very few sinking. And sailing monos is fun - it's what we do. But for circumnavigating, perhaps 'fun' isn't the no. 1 priority...?

We have sailed on larger cats (plus both of us are experienced beachcat racers) since buying the yacht, and that is one reason we're thinking of trading up. You are right, they are more stable, and we will spill fewer meals for sure...

Yeah, and I worded that very carefully. I almost started with "OK, so the cats win".... but thought better of it!
At the end of the day, these are all great points, and are what we need to think about. I think we'll be flying down to take a look next week.

What do you mean by 'stiffer suspension'? Less comfortable?

Re: Jumping Ship: From a Mono to a Cat
I started out wanting to buy a cat, but ended up buying a 2004 Hunter 44DS. You can see the details on the Hunter website. We have been living on it for over a year in the U.S. and British Virgin Islands. No regrets. However, my view is that, with your experience, I would do the research on the internet, talk it over with each other, then make a decision and go for it. Each has its pros and cons, but you will be happy with which ever one you decide on. I have read enough on these forums to know that everyone has there own opinion and many think it is a black and white decision. If you do your homework and make a joint decision you will be happy with it.

LOL....... they bounce over the waves... bit like the 'Bendi's' and others of that design... but it starts sooner and is more repetitative...
You can either live with it or hate it...
Its livable but don't believe that fairy tale about never spilling drinks...
On a Mono they slide... on a Cat they bounce....
