Jon Sanders

I know I know,
It's not multihull but it's in my town.

Jon Sanders at 77 is setting off on another circumnavigation, which will including the Dirk Hartog race and Cape Town to Rio.
Quirky bloke and incredible seaman, up there with the greats.

If your unfamiliar Sanders holds the record for the longest voyage, a solo triple circumnavigation. 71000nm in 658 days. Top that.

Re: Jon Sanders

Thanks for the heads up. This man is my inspiration, ever since seeing the Perry Endevour at the maritime museum in Fremantle.

Did you see the video of his rescue from a sinking boat on a delivery run back in June last year? Very calm, very organised. After seeing dozens of boat rescue videos over the years of boats flopping around in total disarray, by contrast he had the boat as tidy and ship shape as you could hope, but was unable to plug the multiple holes that developed in rough seas. A bit odd, not sure the full story on why rough seas would cause that, but the rescuers did a brilliant job of reversing up to his boat and he just stepped aboard.

Matt

P.S. why did you post this in multihull anyway?

Re: Jon Sanders

A follow up to this.... I spent an hour or so studying the way Mr Sanders had rigged the Perry Endevour and considering the choices he had made. Looking at the photos of his current boat it seems very similar in layout to the Perry Endevour with some unexpected things like what appear to be all wire halyard winches at the mast. There, I knew I should keep ours!

Definitely, well... I'm at a loss for the right words. But he's one of those that's worth watching. Reminds me of some of the others who've tested themselves in the Southern Oceans. Not for fame, or to impress others, but just because it's something they wanted to do. Somewhat akin to how one works to get the perfect knot in a neck tie.

What is this "neck tie" of which you speak?
One always wears a cravat, old chap.

Slightly more challenging though? honestly the thought of the Southern Ocean fills me with dread. Maybe it's something to work up to.
From what I remember, he's never courted much publicity or fame. I cannot imagine what mental strength this sort of trip must require. 10 times?
