Too much work for me.

If you can do all the repairs etc. you will have a lot of boat for the money (no sweat included) even if it is considered a mid to low level cat.

Fortuna island spirit catamarans are out of business, and Admiral Yachts has been working on purchasing the molds, therefore it would be impossible to get any support from the manufacturer in trying to restore this island spirit 401 on ebay, also getting parts, wiringdiagrams, and molded or made parts would be very hard. Also very IMPORTANT read the description where it states that bulkheads has been severly damaged if not destroyed, when fiberglass or laminate get heated up from a fire it gets very brittle and weak, the structual integrity of this boat is definately compromised.

Another issue is marine insurance. You won't get any on a salvage boat until it is repaired at a minimun. In addition, if you can't get insurance, you won't get financing. The listing is a little misleading in that sense because it has a tab for financing. Buyer (bidder) beware for sure.

Guys, you're being too hard on this boat. If bidders don't run the price up too high this could be a steal as the hulls, sails and engines are good. I checked yachtworld and the price on these boats is north of $400K. That sort of allows for a generous repair budget if the price doesn't go too high.

As for the manufacturer being out of business... who cares? Most of us are in in that same 'boat' (pun intended).

I'd say go for it.

Its easy to say "go for it" when you are not holding the risk. All the unknowns, make me nervous.

No, refitting or rebuilding a boat is not easy, but it is very rewarding. I for one have done it and am not only happy with the end result, I would highly recommend it to anyone so inclined.

If you have 500 to 1000 spare hours to spend on the project you should try it, it all works out in the end.

Rick, you are right it could be a good deal for someone willing to spend 1000 hours or more of their own time and they where not planning on ever selling the boat, this boat will always be a SALVAGED boat that anyone interested in purchasing can do a title/document search on and find out it was at one time salvage, another thing is this boat sold new in 2006 base price for $310,000 off course if you add options it would be more but those options if this boat has any are probably damaged, and the lisitng on Yachtworld you are refering to of a 2006 boat in Mexico for $439k is NOT what this boat is worth it is what someones asking price is, if a new one's base price was $310,000 do you really think they will ever get $439k for that boat???

Well....first of all, from what I've seen of this particular boat, I'd put the hours at around 500. In boatspeak this is a new boat. Cat's frequently sell for more than their original sales price, or at the very least depreciate slowly. Mainly this is due to all that stuff you have to add to your brand new boat after the sale. In any event, if anyone can get me into a 2 year old 40' cruising catamaran for less than $200K, please email me immediately.

Incidently, Admiral Catamarans has bought the Fortuna moulds. The Island Spirits will continue to be produced.
