Is This Progress?

After reading through a bunch of old late 80's early 90's Multihull Magazines then coming across this article, I wonder if multihull designs have progressed or regressed over the years. What's your opinion.

Progress? I think they've missed the point really. That and I'm not sure it really qualifies as a catamaran at the point. I mean from the picture another foot or two deeper in the water and it's going to become a mono hull.

Also seems super top heavy with a relatively narrow beam which isn't exactly the safest thing in a multi-hull. Certainly this boat is much more likely to capsize than just about any other production cat.

Yes, the picture taken of the bow is unbelievable. Super wide hulls, very low bridgedeck clearance and what appears to be two glass patio doors facing the bow. If the bridgedeck gets any lower it could probably be classified as a barge!

The 5800. I wonder why they called it that?

5800 tons of displacement?

5800 gallons/liters of polyester resin?

Boat speed 1/5800 of wind speed?

5800 hours to wax the hull?

Anyone have a link to the specs? This narrow beam, high center of effort setup could be dangerous, if it had more sail area.

As said before made for charter. It's like saying when the Morgan OutIsland 41 came out saying monohull design was going backwards. The Morgan was designed for charter and is supposed to be the highest run of large boats made at over 1,000. Shallow draft for the Bahamas, lots of cabin space and separate private cabins. Sailed a friend's OI 41 a bit, and could never come to love it. Don't like the way it sails or the way it looks.

Different boats for different folks. Some people don't care how well a boat sails, as long as it has everything that they would have back at home.

Had the pleasure of chartering it for 8 days in the BVI. It is an awesome boat. And speed didn't seem to be an issue, we sailed along at 10 knots one day. Complete luxury though. If we could afford it, I probably wouldn't want to live on it as it would be a whole lot of boat to clean and maintain, but for charter it is awesome!

Pictures are a bit deceiving as well - If I recall correctly there's more clearance than the picture seems to show.

Really no mystery there. 58' and moorings adds two zeros to their models. 3900, 4300, 4800, 5800...etc. The non charter version is simply a Leopard 58.

Sunsail is similar in their naming, but add the number of cabins at the end. Sunsail 384 (38' cat). Sunsail 444, Sunsail 484..

I guess its just their way of differentiating the name.

Yeah, compared with the old Lagoons the newer ones look like Bucaneers compared with C&C racers....

At 58' I would hope she would sail at 10 kts everyday!

The Outisland isn't a beautiful traditional looking boat but still pretty seaworthy I would imagine.

To me most modern cats are loosing there sexy go fast looks. Even an old Prout looks fast compared to that thing!
