From a friend who built a smaller Piver:

'Almarga' may have been based on a Piver design, but it is no more a
Loadstar as is Amon-Re ! Other than having 3 hulls and a single chine
design it doesn't resemble any of the true Pivers.

I thought Piver Lodestars had a clipper bow, also if I recall they had an upstand about a third of the way along the floats. At least the one I sailed on did

I think the owners are correct in saying it is a Nottingham. I've been aboard that boat and live on Bainbridge Island where it is currently moored. PM me with a phone number and I'd be happy to discuss it with you. From what I've heard, 10 or 11 of these boats were built on Vashon Island many years ago. I have no idea who the builder was, but they are long gone.

dang, with the better photo, I agree with the others, this is not a Lodestar. That said, it looks like a nice bot. Not really familiar with the Nottinghams, but I see allot of things I like about the design.
As for the aft cabin, not all Lodestars are the same. Check my gallery for some shots of my project. No aft cabin (It once had one, and will again). Sloop rigged (was originally a ketch). The fact is, the designs were often modifed by the builder to suit his/her needs. If done right, the result can be a superior vessel.

so i've got some questions:

1) it was mentioned that this boat isn't a loadstar (lodestar?) because it doesn't have a clipper bow - but Y-knot (i posted a link to this one earlier in the thread) doesn't have one either... so is Y-knot not a lodestar either? or have both of these tris been heavily modified from the original design? to me, they both look very similar...

2) if it is a nottingham - what is a nottingham? i haven't been able to find much info here...

3) not sure if this will help: this boat has a centerboard (a rather large one) that is accessible from inside the main cabin area. do lodestars usually have this? i thought i read somewhere that they didn't, and thusly didn't point too well.

in short - i suppose it doesn't really matter to a point - if i can find moorage and the boat checks out in a survey, i'd be tempted to get it regardless. but its still fun to argue over semantics, right?

so on a side note - completely unrelated to if this boat is a piver:

has anyone put a davit system on this type of tri, and

would this boat be capable of handling a davit system large enough to hold a 13' boston whaler? or am i dreaming here?

Those photos look more like a Lodestar.

These type of boats. They made so many differenet variations of them. Sometimes, it is hard to tell one model from the other. Unless you are a top expert. Or...something?

Owners photos look really nice. Have you seriously consider buying that boat. If I were in your shoes. I would buy it. Nice boats!!

Looks very tidy for its age, I dont think you can go wrong with it, as long as you get it for a reasonable price and check out or have a sail in it.

bows do look different, and you can just see the aft cabin.

Either way the boat you are looking at is very nice, unfortunately you may not be able to get any factory build documents and history on it.

I have missed out on a good boat in past because I waited too long.
