Three different scenarios that I see.

He pulls a Slocum and makes it happen.
He pulls a Crowhurst and self destructs.
He proves Darwin's theory.

Biggest fear I have is people will get hurt trying to save him from himself.

I truly don't understand why some people are willing to risk their lives to prove themselves. With something like this it is truly do or die. This is not something like what Sir Edmund Hillary accomplished. He did not go to Home Depot and buy less than ideal materials in order to climb to the summit of Everest...as an earlier article said.

Camaraderie posted this link on another board. Sailing Ancharcy has had a first hand look at the "Can" as it was being launched for it's test sail. It only gets worse...

How did you reply to that thread? I say let him go. Many people said it can't be done about many things. Only to be proven wrong. Where do we draw the line of who can go, and who can't? Soon they will find something else we won't be allowed to do. He will prove us wrong, or be removed from the gene pool.

I also understand the risk of rescue, and cost. Just where do we , and who draws the line is my worry.

The argument about the chance of him needing rescue could be applied to all of the ocean races - they go on a set date regardless of the weather, which represents poor seamanship IMHO - so should they have to sign a "rescue waiver" too?

The part that bothers me most is not him putting his life at risk, it is the prospect of someone else risking their life to rescue him.
