Ok people, I have wanted a screecher for a while now for our Simpson but is it going to make much of a difference seeing as we have (and use a lot) an asymmetric spinnaker ? We use the mps from about 65/70 apparent to ddw. I guess we would use the screecher more because it is there furled and ready to go? Would a screecher use the same blocks as the spinnaker? And would you run the screecher off the end of the pole and the mps halyard or in abit with new gear? (You can see our spiny and pole etc. under the post Our cat).

Yes, I always run my screecher off the end of my pole.

You already have an asymmetric?

Screacher = 5-12k apparent, with apparent wind foreword of abeam. More than that and you want the genoa. Less and you're drifting and will probably want to start the engine.

So -- will you use it a lot? Is it more important than having the money it would cost? (don't forget to figure in the furling gear and control lines/blocks).

Only you can answer.

You can always ease the spiny pole in or out but in the end only you can decide if its worth it.

I figured by the time I'd paid for the sail, the furler, the prodder, the bridle and the blocks, I wouldn't have much change from $8k.

Sometimes, when the wind is light, it would be nice to have, but the $8k is ALWAYS nice to have.

Hi Alan , it was nice to meet you the other day. I know what your saying money wise, thats why i thought I'd ask for some opinions. We already have the prodder , would i be able to use the spinnaker blocks? Someone must have been in the same position and went ahead...........be nice to know their thoughts on whether it was worth doing.

A screacher places much higher loads on the pole and halyard then a chute, perhaps 10 times, depending on how tight you run the halyard. Someone needs to review the pole design.

I often use the screecher for winds 7-10, but have not had success in sustaining the boat foiling. But hull borne, it helps to move along. -- RAVE on.
