Insurance required urgently

Greetings

Just closed on an 1991 Antigua 37 in South Carolina.

I need insurance for the next year which will inlcude delivery of the yacht by a skipper from SC to Georgia (early October) and then cover whilst laid up in a boatyard for one year.

This is whilst I tidy my affairs in the UK and then come out to do some essential work before setting off cruising (eastern Seaboard of the US and the Caribbean).

Strange situation I know but the broker I have working on it at the moment hasn't come up with a number that is in my eyes sensible.

Surely I should be looking at less than 1% of boat value?

Any suggestions as to who to contact would be great as I need insurance in place when I close on the 5th of next month (September).

Surely I should be looking at a pretty low premium as the boat is only going to be a Port Risk for 48 weeks out of the next 52.

Thanks in advance

Richard

You can get instant quotes online from some insurance companies like Progressive .

Re: Insurance required urgently

Insurance costs cover a wide range. You will get a little break because you are North of Florida but without knowing specifics of the coverage it is hard to estimate the costs. One percent may be a little low for what I will call basic coverage but if you are willing to cut corners you can lower the price.

$3K???!!!!!

We just purchased a very good liability and small amount of hull insurance on our Cape Dory 33 for around $350 for the year from Boat U.S. What kind of insurance are you trying to purchase?? You're saying only port risk, and not hull insurance?? Why would it be so much?

What is the insured value of your boat? $350 a year does sound like a good price, especially considering it's coming from Boat US.

I recommend Bill Porter or Joe Kolisch at the following agency. They have been my broker for 5 years and saved me a ton of money. Any time I need something special their follow-up has been immediate.

Kolisch Marine Insurance Inc.

Unless you have a Us address or zip code many insurers will not quote, that is what happened to me ( Brit married to an American, living then in UK but buying US boat in Florida to cruise/live on long term. I was given the name of a very helpful brokerage for 'Seaworthy' insurers, broker now changed, and is now called Novamar. Contact jerry Norman or Traci Meier. We found them most helpful and stayed with then when the first boat was sold and we bought our current one. IIRC the insurance ironically is underwritten via Lloyds of London. WE have 12 months cover in Florida with no extra premium for hurricane season,( but the deductible goes up for named storm damage). When we first went with them it was for a 47ft trawler that we were leaving stored ashore after purchase survey for 12 months pending my getting my US Visa and us moving here for good. We did pay a hurricane season premium that first year of around $600 IIRC. I have copied and pasted below from an email to show the contact details.

Just a reminder Jerry Norman and Traci Meier joined Novamar Insurance Group effective December 2nd 2013, due to a change in ownership at the agency.

Please contact Jerry or Traci in our Sarasota office for your current and future marine insurance needs.

Re: Insurance required urgently

I'd suggest panteneus or topsail would be the best bet, but expect closer to 1.5%. You may be able to reduce it with a higher deductible/excess

Re: Insurance required urgently

I have a Searunner 37 trimaran, homebuilt in 1987. It is fiberglass over wood. The only place that would give me a quote within reason was Boat U.S., about $780. I have resorted to just a $1,000,000 liability umbrella policy on my homeowners for $150. That is enough to make the marinas happy but I have to accept that if the boat is lost I get nothing.

Re: Insurance required urgently

Making progress, every quote that arrives is less than the last one I'll be sure to give feedback when I'm done.

So far I would advise anybody with special requirements to speak to a human being and don't fill in online forms.

They never leave space for you to fully explain your requirements.
