Thanks Factor, I did a search for public holidays in Canberra and obviously missed it.

Re: Importing a Boat to Australia

Time to move on I think, if you are after a cat they seem a bit more abundant and cheaper in the Caribbean, though dealing with the French authorities is a bit of a challenge.
Beware of buying a cheaper boat too they can cost you a lot more in the long run.
I hope you find something.

Re: Importing a Boat to Australia

Has anyone noticed how much cheaper imported boats are getting here in Aus?

  • Strong AUD
  • Weak USD
  • More imports coming through
  • General global financial woes
Is that what might be causing this?

Has the import taxes and duties been changed due to Free trade agreements?

No changes to import duties or taxes, I think your first 3 points are probably on the money.

I have not noticed any real change but that does not mean much you could be right but I might suggest that sales at this end may be the real cause. Although our dollar is favourable you still have to find a buyer at this end and from what I have seen boat ownership is on the decline. Brokers and marina staff are suggesting things are not that good in both areas. Increased running costs electricity and water have pushed the fees up + less customers looking for berths. While Julia and her Red mates are in government its not likely to change either.
No the taxes and duty has not gone down, has any government charge gone any other direction other than skyward.

Re: Importing a Boat to Australia

The only relevant free trade agreement is the one with NZ which came into force in January last year. All the others are much older being from 2005 and before. If the Australian boat market has lowered its prices it is because so many Australian buyers have taken their money to the Caribbean.

There are plenty of threads here about that. Reduced prices within Australia is just sellers meeting the market. Happens everywhere.

Oh well, at least you miss the peak season rush. April is pretty busy in Panama, Galapagos and Marquesas. They all want to be in Tahiti by May.

Yeah, I've got professionals onboard now they reckon they can get through the canal with only a 4 day wait using their "agent".
Looks like I'm going to see my boat sooner too.

Not sure, will advise after the Sanctuary Cove Boat Show next month.

I have noticed many foreign (not yet imported) used boats being advertised by local brokers in Australia. If you enquire about the well priced foreign vessel, they try to redirect you to considerably more expensive local craft. If pressed the broker will invariably admit that they have no organised or negotiated importation package, however if you wish to buy that boat on the other side of the world and import it yourself, they would like to get a share of the commission.
