Question Hydrofoil Cruising Cats

Has anyone out there heard of any kind of cruising cat using a hydrofoil or wave piercing hull? If not, is there a reason why they aren't being used or made?

Re: Hydrofoil Cruising Cats?

Hydrofoil demands a lightweight performance boat.

Cruising demands an ability to carry the weight requirements and rather more luxury (= more weight).

Thus hydrofoil cruising catamaran is a bit of an oxymoron.

(like military intelligence?)

Re: Hydrofoil Cruising Cats?

Cruising cats with wavepiercing bows do exist, to my knowledge they are all on-offs.

Here are some I have come across:
- top left is a Norwegian 11.5m cat
- top right is "Victorinox" a KKG built cruiser / racer
- bottom is the South African built G Force 16m.

The leeward hulls of the Harryproa are all wavepiercing as well.

Re: Hydrofoil Cruising Cats?

You don't want to run a hydrofoil into anything. They also increase your draft which decreases where you can go. They are also less efficient until they are on a plane. The wind doesn't always blow hard enough to take advantage of them. They are prone to catching kelp and other junk.

Re: Hydrofoil Cruising Cats?

If you want a cruising hydrofoiling boat, just set up an ultralight backpacking dry-bag, throw it at the base of the mast of your hydrofoiling race boat, and go cruising! It's not gonna be luxurious, but you probably won't die. To each their own. I prefer my slow and comfortable boat.
