Sea
Hunter we have a 2008 model 420
diesel. I don't think there's a 2009 model, although the
lagoon you might be looking at may have been
sold in 2009, as was ours. I believe that the next version was the 421.
I have a friend with a 420 Hybrid and he says "best
boat I ever owned!" But you have to love the hybrid
concept and generally that model was not well received.
We have the
diesel version and I would not swap it for another cat and certainly not for another Lagoon Model. In our experience it is the best model Lagoon produced when you take all factors into account.
We've had it for over 4 years full time cruising. Very comfortable
boat.
Sails quite well. Handles well. Can
single hand if needed. Solid. Great accommodation (owners version). High
Bimini is great,
solar panels mounted on top. Dry boat - with clears you can sail and be out of the
weather. All lines back to the
helm. Good
helm position.
I hear lots of criticism about the 420 from experts but NONE from owners. I figure that the hybrid got a bad write -up when it first came out and that reputation has unfortunately persisted, but it's not a good assessment.
That said, remember it's a big solid but heavy boat, with sail area to match its primary market which is
charter. In other words it won't go in 5-10kts. But put a screecher or assy on it and away you go. Loves 20 kts with the standard
sails. Will take a good
wind before you need to reef. I think I've only ever reeled about twice in 4 years.
When I looked at
buying the 420 I was warned off it as it was reputed to be a "dog". Our favorite saying as we are sailing along comfortably at a good speed is "bit of a dog this boat!!!!"
No problems
maintenance wise. Just had the standing rig inspected after about 7-8 years. Excellent. Gelcoat/fiberglass excellent.
Interior good. One or two signs of movement but that to be expected.
Hull very sound.
Decks flat. Huge
storage available forward.
Anchor locker great. Better arrangement than on other lagoons because the
anchor windlass is well forward.
Short cantilevered
bowsprit (no bracing stays required) easy access for assy tack or screecher
furler.
If you can find a 420 don't pass it up. There aren't too many available
for sale where I come from.
