Plastic hull.
I myself do not know any scientist, who told the world we can now forget about diffusion. Time will do the rest.

Aluminum (OK, PROPER alu alloy!) can hold its properties (and value) far longer compared to "modern" plastic. IMHO.

Aluminium will last forever provided it doesn't corrode in the meantime.

Re: How old is too old?

Aluminium last longer than plastic ? That's a joke right ? Not heard of electrolysis ? Fine for overbuilt commercials that get bashed about, not for pleasures unless very large !
Around here ally yachts are called aspirins.

Yet in France they are called mainstream...

I suspect that the difference between attitudes is that in France the alloy yachts are designed and built by firms that have been doing so for decades. In Oz, at least in the eastern parts where we hang out, alloy yachts are one-offs, often built by folks with little yacht experience. The results are predictable... asprins!

Of course, there are exceptions! We know at least one extremely fine Oz designed and built alloy yacht (Volo) which is over twenty years of age and which has just returned from a 9 year cruise which included both Cape Horn and Labrador... and she looks pretty damn good and has no electrolysis issues whatsoever.

As you can see the above video is how NOT to do it! Completely wrong, but at least they didn't end up on the beach!

That Jimmy Cornell fellow must be a dill then, he has sailed the world and written the definitive World Cruising books on aluminium yachts.

Every Lizard, Easton and Mumby Cat (Australian Aluminium Cats) launched seem to be still going strong. The only variable that leaves is the fine people of Freo. Must be a lack of understanding of the material in Perth.

OH and as for electrolysis, ever heard of anodes.

Hope this may confirm alu hull longevity if the boat is not built by i@iots (sorry)

So on a $800,000 boat that works out to 10-15k, or 1.25%-1.8% the cost of the boat every year for sails alone.

That's sound really high. Are you sure?

Re: How old is too old?

Consider 90-150 eur/Sqm, depending on textile/fibers
Thus, 8-14k + vat
